Bali is a living postcard, an Indonesian paradise that feels like a fantasy. Soak up the sun on a stretch of fine white sand, or commune with the tropical creatures as you dive along coral ridges or the colorful wreck of a WWII war ship. On shore, the lush jungle shelters stone temples and mischievous monkeys. The “artistic capital” of Ubud is the perfect place to see a cultural dance performance, take a batik or silver-smithing workshop, or invigorate your mind and body in a yoga class.

Kharisma Antiques opened its doors in 1998, after many years of traveling and sourcing antiques and decorative objects from the archipelago of Asia. From years of knowledge, today we bring you a collection of antiques and home furnishings from all over Indonesia.
I was looking for somewhere to buy antique beads and was thrilled to find this store. The owner is an extremely knowledgable ex-pat with extensive experience selling antiques of all kinds but has a specialised knowledge of antique beads from all over the world. He was so friendly, helpful and a delight to shop with. He also makes his own jewellery with the beads if you’re just looking for something unique to take home from your trip instead of the usual en masse product sold everywhere.

From Bali to Borneo, From Turkmenistan to Timor, From Cambodia to China, and more places in between, Murni has assembled a huge array of antiques, treasures and gifts in her shop, which is conveniently located, next to her famous restaurant, Murni’s Warung, just a 5 minute walk from the centre of Ubud. She opened her shop at the same time as her restaurant in 1974. Murni was the first person in Ubud to have a proper gallery of antiques, textiles, costumes, old beads, tribal jewelry, stone carvings, masks and other ceremonial and ethnic pieces. She travels constantly in search of unique, unusual and rare pieces and is always looking for the best quality. Many are museum pieces and she has supplied museums. Murni’s first show abroad was the prestigiously vetted San Francisco Arts of Pacific Asia Show, 2007, followed by Los Angeles Asian and Tribal Art Show, 2008 and the Arts of Pacific Asia Show, 2009 and the Tribal and Textile Arts Show, 2009. Murni has an extensive online shop.

“If the Forbidden City had an attic it would be a lot like Folkart Gallery. Remarkable Asian Art from the farthest corners of Asia. Burmese art, textiles, tribal wearable art, altars and shrines, new and collectable jewelry. Cards, journals, essential oils , from the heart of the people that produced them. They reveal the better angels of our nature. It is a welcome haven from the storm of ghastly goods”.
