Kazakhstan (Kazakh: Қазақстан, translit. Qazaqstan, IPA: [qɑzɑqˈstɑn] ( listen); Russian: Казахстан, IPA: [kəzɐxˈstan]), officially the Republic of Kazakhstan (Kazakh: Қазақстан Республикасы, translit. Qazaqstan Respýblıkasy; Russian: Республика Казахстан, tr. Respublika Kazakhstan), is the world's largest landlocked country, and the ninth largest in the world, with an area of 2,724,900 square kilometres (1,052,100 sq mi). Kazakhstan is the dominant nation of Central Asia economically, generating 60% of the region's GDP, primarily through its oil/gas industry. It also has vast mineral resources. Some argue that Kazakhstan may be considered a European country because Kazakhstan's Western region is on the European continent and meets the Council of Europe's criteria for European inclusion.

The ancient city of Kultobe is the oldest part of Turkestan. It is located on the eastern edge of the modern city, which is the center of pilgrimage tourism and a historical monument of Kazakhstan. But only the archaeological excavations on the Kultobe hill can tell about the most ancient stages. The archaeological discovery of recent years was the architectural complex of the ancient citadel.

Sauran Archaeological Site turned out to be a surprise hit of our trip to Kazakhstan. It is regarded as the best surviving medieval fort in the country and it is extremely photogenic. We were entranced by the mud-brick fortress walls, the blue skies and the palpable sense of history. If you want everything nicely restored and tidied up, this isn't the place for you. There has been mud-brick restoration on vulnerable parts of the walls, but the old walls are preserved under the recent additions. They haven't been demolished. There is one excavated section in the middle of the fortress which has numerous walls and cells. Again, new bricks serve as a lid to protect the original sections. Overall, this fortress is mostly a place to stir the imagination. You can imagine the White Horde ruling over the steppes from here and camels and traders coming down the Silk Road.
