A wide variety of pyramids, temples and sculptures have all been found at this famous Mayan archaeological site.
Fabulous. This site is quite extensive and diverse. Do look for the Tower Palace (which seems quite unusual). Go inside and explore some of the tunnels. (There are bats, if you want to look for them.) There is a very interesting quadrangle with the Temples of the Sun and Cross. Dramatic. There is also a ball court although that takes a bit of imagination. This site is a major attraction - so get there early

Yaxchilan Arqueological site where the only way to get there is by taking a boat in the river Usumacinta and it is a 30min. ride and it is beautiful and also you can see the howler monkeys , spider monkeys, Toucan birds and parrots. Beautiful place.

A must visit archaeological site in Mexico!! Located in the heart of the 'selva', it's worth taking a guide to fully grasp the majesty of the Mayan civilisation in Palenque. Our favourite :)

This was an amazing visit for us. We had the place practically for ourselves allowing us to take very nice pictures without other people on it. The pyramid is a one of a kind experience for us: easily the highest we climbed, with very steep staircases awarding you the most amazing view of the valley. We slept in the cabanas next to the entrance which was also really nice because we got to see the valley shrouded in the morning fog. If you're planning to see multiple maya sites this has to be on your list! Do not get discouraged by the infamous dangerous road (or rather, the roadblocks) leading to it. The landscape is actually some of the most amazing in the region and although annoying (we spent 2h in the middle of nowhere) the roadblocks are far from dangerous and you can even make some chit chat with the other people in line who, just like you, can do nothing but wait and enjoy some diverting conversation.

In the middle of the jungle of the Lacandona zone. Still well-preserved paintings. Without the masses of the tourist. People who really enjoy the culture.
