Parco Archeologico della Villa romana

Reviewed By coastdream1966

The Roman Villa of Casignana is a must see on anyone’s bucket list of things to do in southern Italy. It is along the Statale 106, the state route which runs along the Calabrian Ionian coast. The area is under the supervision of Giuseppe Romeo, who enables visitors to see the Villa and admire its precious ruins at a very close distance. All of the works have been covered to protect them from the elements, but this also allows you to stroll around in comfort even in the middle of summer. A tunnel has been built which connects the mountain side area with the seaside complex. Mosaics showing four feminine figures riding monsters in the shape of a lion,a tiger, a horse and a bull, are rich in colour and clarity. The unearthed evidence, the precious marbles, painted stuccos and mosaics all add up to lavishly decorated interiors suggesting that this Roman Villa housed royalty, making it a historically significant site and a must see for all visitors to this area.

Insediamento Rupestre e Museo della Civilta Rupestre e Contadina di Zungri

Among the main historical and cultural testimonies of the Poro promontory, a very rare architectural jewel stands out, located on a ridge in the valley of the Malopara stream, facing south-east with an altitude between 515 and 430 m above sea level. It is the Rupestrian settlement of the "Sbariati" in Zungri, a real village entirely excavated in the sandstone rock, whose origin, in reality, remains unknown, although it is assumed to exist as early as the Middle Ages and not excluding the part older still awaits to come to light. Made with great technical and functional mastery and an ingenious use of natural resources, the site shows visitors many caves, designed for the use of residential and production activities, sources, efficient management of water resources and a complex internal road network - consisting of stairs and paths - and external, which connects the settlement to the plain above. At the entrance is the Museo della Civilta Contadina
