It’s a stunning feat of ancient building work, creating a final resting place for Royal remains. Scholars believe that it likely has no association with either legendary Agamemnon or Atreus, being constructed much earlier the Homeric exploits of the former. It was marvellous approaching the entrance with its astonishing lintel stone of about 120 tons. The feat of getting this into place in antiquity is unsurprisingly still not fully comprehended. Awe-inspiring was the experience of entering the cavern and gazing around. With a dome to marvel at, this remained the largest such in the world for more than a millennium. It was an unforgettable visit.

Mycenae was the hub of a civilization that dominated the Greek world between 1600 and 1200 BC. It is located about 18 miles north of Nafplio. The archeological ruins consist of a walled city with the famous Lion Gate entrance, Grave Circle A and most impressive of all, the Treasury of Atreus, a huge domed tomb that is also known as the Tomb of Agamemnon. There is an entry fee of approximately 12 Euros for non-Euro nations visitors but it is well worth the visit.

Amazing view of the ancient port and a Roman Villa at just 2 meters depth. Totaly clear water and amazing view. It's a great visit besides the archeological site and the theater of Asclepius in Epidaurus

Thursday 8th October and we visited this ancient site which was the sanctuary of Asclepius the god of medicine. It was also here where Hippocrates, the father of medicine, practiced and taught. Rediscovered in in 1902 by the German archeologist Herzog. Despite the ravages of time, natural disasters and removal of artefacts, this remains something special. The entry fee was €8 and not €3 as listed on the website. It was possible to purchase a ticket for entry to here, the museum and Casa Romana, valid for 3 days for €15. On entering the site we were totally amazed as to the size of the place, it was vast. We decided that the best way to see the place was to start at the top and work our way back down again. As the site is laid out over 3 levels, we climbed the two massive flights of steps up to the top level, once we caught our breaths, we started our exploration. There is so much to see and many eye catching features which included the vast arched retaining wall, the upright pillars of the Stoa and the various altars.

We had an amazing site all to ourselves for a few hours. The theater is cut into solid rock, and the nearby Roman baths are raw, showing many features remaining from the original structure.

It is impossible really fully to appreciate the story of Kleobis and Biton at Herodotos 1.31 unless one has visited the Argive Heraion. Top site.
