Located across Hwy 160 from the Adams State campus, the Monterrey Cafe has been around for a long time. At one time, we often ate here and the food was very good. Recently the quality of food and service as dropped to average. I hope the next time I visit the quality improves.
Stopped for a quick sandwich, planned on a mountain lake picnic. Lunch time so busy, almost left due to long line, glad we didn't. They really know how to build a sandwich, much faster than our home town Subway. Got four foot longs for the four of us and they were very tasty and enough for two meals at a fraction of what we had been paying for meals.
See what the Colonel's cooking at your local KFC. Stop in today and enjoy our world famous chicken - it's Finger Lickin' Good!
Your standard KFC. My wife and I ate here because it was right next to Best Western Alamosa Inn where we were staying. We could walk right over. Fairly large and relatively clean establishment. I could not believe how fast the service was. Certainly not slow like the KFC back home.

I had dinner here with my family group, some of whom like breakfast foods for dinner (not so much me). Their breakfast foods were quite good and the portions were generous.I preferred non-breakfast food and wanted to order soup, but was told that they had none. The server explained that they only open one bag each day and when it's gone they won't open another. So I had the cheesesteak sandwich and the menu said I could have fruit with it as an option to fries, but when I ordered it the server told me that I'd have to pay extra, even though the menu did not say this. The sandwich was okay, nothing special. Now, this is a restaurant where a lot of customers order items like pancakes that involve the use of syrup. However, if you want more than a single flimsy paper napkin, you have to request additional ones.My wife likes boysenberry syrup on her pancakes, but this is not provided on the tables. She asked the sever, and it turns out that you can get it if you ask.If you are lover of breakfast foods, you'll likely be pretty satisfied here. If not, you'll settle for an average meal and probably wish you were eating elsewhere.

I ordered a combination that had beef burrito, cheese enchilada , Spanish rice and refried beans, The refried beans had an awful taste as if they were refried in rancid hamburger lard. The Spanish rice was flooded with pepper and cumin. The burrito was supposed to be beef but it had mostly beans. My wife had guacamole tostada, hard shell beef taco and bean burrito. I liked my wife's tostada and she liked the it and the beef taco. She also had problems with the rice and beans used in the meal. The salsa was awesome and the chips that came with it were crunchy and they had the right amount of salt. The green chili looked liked white gravy lacking the green chile and tasted like it was made with jalapeño powder.

This place is a joke! I found huge lumps of flour in my green chili, and when asked to speak with a manager, the clueless waitress directed me to the owner ( who was dressed in what appeared to be pajama shorts and a big messy t-shirt) she had no interest in what the issue was, just very persistent on us paying for the plate. By no means were we out for a free meal, I just did not want to return home with an empty stomach. As if that wasn't a circus in itself, my husband (a retired veteran, with a salt and pepper beard) was carded when he ordered a beer! The teenager, or at least I am assuming she was anyway, told us she had to wait for someone to pour his beverage, but when he ordered another, she did not hesitate to go behind the bar and pour him another beer. I did not understand what that was all about but I will say that I will never give that place another dime, nor will I recommend it to friends and family.

Breakfast and lunch
My girlfriend and I stopped in and had breakfast on Labor Day. Even though it was early (7:30 am) the place was already getting crowded. Thankfully that didn't stop the waitress from being efficient and giving us great service. The food was quite good; and reasonably priced. I had the special: eggs, hash browns, bacon and some of their delicious homemade bread. My only criticism is that the coffee was pretty bad. Guess I could have gone to one of the famous competitors nearby for that. Anyways, I will return the next time I want breakfast in Alamosa.

On our first night in Alamosa we decided to opt for a known entity, in this case Chili's. Having dined in several Chili's across the U.S., we knew what to expect. The food was well-prepared and the service acceptable. Chili's can tend to get very busy, which may result in a wait, but that was not the case here despite the crowd. The garden salad with chicken was very good. The fajitas (in this case chicken) are always a good bet and a very good value.

They have a great and interesting selection of beers, I particularly liked the green chili lager (though I love green chili so not to everyones taste). The food was fine but not outstanding. The place was quite busy and buzzing when we went. The building is quite interesting and old for the area.

We hadn't been to Rubi Slipper in a while, so decided to visit again. Their prices are a bit higher than most restaurants in Alamosa (which is why we usually don't go there), but they do have a really extensive menu, offering southwestern items, TONS of burgers (probably at least 30 different choices), other sandwiches, etc. So if you have a big group of people dining out together, it's a good choice since there should be something on the menu to satisfy everyone. They also make their own desserts, which are usually really good. However, last night (a Saturday night) they had NO desserts available at all. Really strange since it is the busiest night of the week.
