Top 10 African food in Malindi, Coast Province, Kenya

Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama stopped at Malindi on his way to India in 1498 and erected a pillar that remains overlooking the harbor, however precariously, to this day. Still popular with Europeans, Malindi is famed for coral reefs that lie just 1,000 feet off its shore, best seen at Malindi National Marine Park or nearby Watamu. Game fishing, surfing and simply relaxing on the beach are popular local pastimes. The narrow streets and market of Malindi's old town are worth a visit.

We only discovered this restaurant on our last day in Malindi and wished we had found it at the beginning! There is a pub side where you can play pool. The restaurant side has a very simple outdoor setting in nice tree shades with simple furniture and decorated with reggae colors. The food was freshly prepared and we felt that this is the best grilled food we have eaten in Malindi! Fantastic! They have grilled meats, grilled sea food platter among others. I would highly recommend it if you want to get the real African feel and enjoy great grills!

My second visit to Malindi in one years time and again the Kilili Baharini beach and restaurant was my number one go to spot. While I stayed in an Apartment close by, the beach here was by far my favorite and for so many days I would hang out here. Lunch was excellent and I think David the beach boy with the towels and cushions couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. And the staff at the front desk were more than excellent, always a smile, look you in the eye, not playing with their phones, and not many places in Kenya can have this high quality of service. Payment with a cc was always a snap and fast, and no glitches of the terminals being down. And for that matter all the staff were excellent and all were in tune with superb guest services as it should be, and makes one want to return and keep coming back.Beach chairs and lounges were more than comfortable, and more than clean, and askaris were on top of the game, and if a walking by beach boy lingered too long, they would politely ask them to move on. Not at all like a beach in say Puerto Vallarta Mexico where the beach vendors and hawkers drive you nuts. And as tourism is at such a low level now in Kenya at least on the Coast, it is more than sad as the numbers are way down and it is the local people who are hurt so much by the lack of jobs, etc. Al Shabaab seems to have won the day for now, but hopefully om the near fiuture, this threat will be diminished and normal tourism will be returned to the Kenyan Coast/.Thanks to Kilili Baharini to having such a fantastic and welcoming facility!!Jim from Minnesota in USA

Thanks for finally listing this restaurant! The restaurant is always full of people and busy. The service from ordering to payment is on point. The attendants are attentive and courteous as well. This is the only place in Malindi serving real and delicious pilau, biriani, fish and well spiced juices as well. Absolutely at a pocket friendly price. It is situated a few minutes stroll to the beach, so we ate and walked through the narrow streets to the nearby Vasco Da Gama pillar. Welcome all to Simba restaurant, I recommend you try the fish, rice and tamarind juice. See you again soon and thank you.

Nice place. To get there, you drive through the salt exploitations which is funny to see. When you come, Safari, very funny and nice guy, will entertain you while "sailing" you to the island. You come there, very quiet and relaxing place, you might go for a swim in the sea before eating a 5-6 plates menu. Excellent food, Cooked oysters with coco, Crabs, shrimps, salade and fruit to finish with.. I missed the wine though with a good meal like that..
