Do yourself a favour and come here. It's the best!We wanted to go to a Michelin Star restaurant while we were in Tokyo as Tokyo has the most Michelin Starred restaurants of any city in the world. We decided to go to this restaurant, which was just off Cat Street. It was on the top level of a shopping centre building, so it took us a little while to find.We managed to get ourselves a table without a booking, which was fortunate. We waited in a plush waiting room that was full of antiques until our table was ready. We were then brought through to a bright open room where chefs were cooking meals in front of their customers. Customers were seated along a table that was facing the teppanyaki hot plates and we took our place towards the end of the table. Behind us there were full length windows that had a view out to the city below. Each group of customers had their own chef and there were a few different lunch sets that you could choose from. We both had the steak lunch course, which was the middle option. We were brought a pretty little seafood appetiser which came with a tomato foam and was absolutely delicious. Next, our chef brought out some fresh clams, opened them up in front of us and cooked them on the grill. The clams were huge and we weren't sure how we'd get through all of it, but after the chef trimmed it down it looked a lot more manageable. That was also very nice.Next, our chef brought out a couple of portions of beautifully marbled steak. We watched eagerly as he expertly cooked the steak on the teppanyaki plate and sliced it into smaller portions for us to eat. He served that with a mount of sliced onion which come with a vinaigrette and also slices of baked garlic. Finally we could choose from garlic fried rice or cold noodles. We had one of each (I preferred the rice) and that came with miso soup and pickles.Next to us a couple must have ordered the most expensive lunch set as we saw some abalone flowering open on the hotplate just before we left. That was cooked alive – which we thought was a bit ethically questionable. Fortunately we didn't have that set. When our meal came to an end we thanked our chef with a "goche so suma deshita". We were then led to an elegant withdrawing room to take our coffee or tea and sweets. We chose a creme caramel and a vanilla cake with strawberries and cream for dessert. They were nice, but we probably would have preferred different options in hindsight. The coffee and cakes were served on delicate china and we had a window seat which overlooked the city. It was very high falutin. We eyed off the dessert trolley from a distance, and when it came around we were asked what we wanted and were told me could have as much as we want. Obviously we went for it and pretty much had one of everything. So much for trying to be refined and fancy! Haha! We joked that we were having petit tens rather than petit fours. This restaurant was one of the highlights of our trip.Thoroughly satisfied, we were given back our coats and our bags and escorted to the elevator.

In spite of the excellent reviews we read, this restaurant even exceeded our already high expectations. The staff took very good care of us from beginning to end and, whilst preparing our meat in front of our eyes, would also explain the history and traditions behind the dish. The meat was absolutely excellent (and we are quite demanding when it comes to meat), and the whole experience felt more like dining in a beautiful Japanese home than at a restaurant.Do not miss the green tea mousse with vanilla ice cream as desert either, it’s outstanding. We can not recommend Ikuta highly enough and will definitely be back when we next travel to Tokyo.

Most of the reviews for this place are for the beef croquette downstairs of this restaurant. Upstairs is the sit-down Matsuzaka beef wonderland. Given the price difference between the two floors, it makes sense that most people stick to the croquettes. However, given the time and budget, I would recommend getting some of the best Matsuzaka beef you can find. It brings a bit of a tear to the eye recollecting the flavor.
