We went to Nikko on a very rainy day, we wanted to eat good. They were very kind, waited on us even that we were late, the food was really nice but too small portions fit hungry people.

Main Dining Room

We ate here three times for breakfast and once for dinner. I guess they are trying to maintain the old fashioned formal style of service from the past, but mostly it comes off as snooty and unfriendly, unfortunately. It took us three times being served by the same English-speaking waitress before she finally lightened up. The younger ones in particular have a standoffish attitude. Since almost all of them act this way, I assume it is coming from management. The older staff members don't have this attitude and were all very nice, but there are very few of them left.Overall the food for all meals was acceptable, but nothing memorable. The breakfast menu included everything one would expect in a hotel dining room, so there is something for everyone. It is expensive, but not outrageous considering the location. The food came out of the kitchen very slowly and in no particular order. We didn't care since we weren't in any big rush, but if you are trying to eat quickly to get out and see the sights, you might want to skip the formal breakfast here.Dinner is a formal affair with prices to match. I don't recall the exact details, but there is a French-inspired menu that starts when the restaurant opens at 5:00 PM. It has two fixed price full course meals that start at over $100 per person. You may order ala carte also. The choices are very old fashioned Continental dishes you hardly find on any menu anymore. From 7:30-9:00 PM a "Grill" menu replaces the formal one and the prices are more reasonable. When I was looking at the grill menu in the lobby, one of the staff came up and said that if I want steak or something similar (which is what is on that menu) I would be much better off going to a restaurant in town (he gave me directions and called to be sure it was open). Point is, even the staff doesn't recommend the restaurant. We did eat there once and the food was OK, nothing special. I was advised to arrive around 7:00 PM to avoid the people who are be served the meal plan earlier, but since it was never busy I don't know why I was told that unless maybe the kitchen can't handle it or something. The dining room is old, as is the hotel, but it is clean and in good condition. When I asked if I would need a dinner reservation, the person I asked at the front desk actually laughed and said not to bother. When we did go to dinner, there were only three other people in the restaurant on a Saturday night. Even so, the food came out very slowly, so apparently there is some problem with the kitchen overall. There is a sign at the door that says something like, "Appropriate attire please," but that doesn't mean coat and tie or anything like that. We went in normal clean tourist clothes and didn't feel out of place. Nobody else in the restaurant was dressed up at all.Overall, I can only recommend this place as a one-off for a special occasion or just to say you did it. If there had been any other options for breakfast, we would have gone elsewhere.

Lots of choice in the buffet available in the evenings at Plaisir, and overall good quality. When we were there though, the fruits were quite old, and the sashimi weren't good at all, so be careful with those but otherwise it's good, even though quite expensive.
