Things to do in Yucatan Peninsula, Yucatan Peninsula: The Best Other Outdoor Activities

July 30, 2021 Vivienne Hutton

Hidden gems of Yucatan, such as Tulum, Akumal, Chetumal, Chichen Itza and Merida, offer an authentic taste of Mexico. Akumal and more Caribbean-style Chetumal, near the Belize border, deliver delectable white-sand beaches and great snorkelling. Merida, Chichen Itza and Tulum, with their ancient ruins, offer a passage into the Yucatanâs native history. Nature lovers can jungle trek and swim in subterranean sinkholes filled with crystal-clear water. Bike around the ruins and hop between towns in colectivo vans.

Rancho Bonanza

A unique and exciting way to get in touch of the true nature of the Mayan Riviera is on the back of a horse combined with a Cenote swim. We have healthy, well trained horses appropriate for first timers, novice and intermediate riders. Our tours are semi-private consisting of groups up to 12 riders, ensuring that everyone receives personal attention from our friendly, knowledgeable guides. We are located in a very convenient location between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. During the trail ride be ready to spot various species of birds, iguanas, butterflies and eventually spider monkeys and coatis; our guides will give you an interesting and entertaining commentary along the trails while you pass by a local plantation and follow the path that will lead you to visit a deep natural pit or sinkhole -characteristic of Mexico- resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. We will then remount and head back to the ranch, where at the end of the ride you will be given an opportunity to take a refreshing swim in our open air Cenote and enjoy some cool refreshments.Private tours can be offered for advanced riders upon request. Please do not forget to bring bug spray, sunscreen, closed toe shoes , bathing suit & towel and be ready to enjoy a different way to spend your day. WIFI es available on site.

Tankah

Located near the town of Tulum, in the heart of the forest, Tankah village combines the wonders of nature with the mysticism of the ancient Maya.

We visited Cozumel on a cruise and took this 9hr tour (from the ship) to Tulum and Tankah cenotes (about 4-5hrs). It was very well organised, the guide was great (Bertin) and the shop and cultural show at the visitor centre too. We drove into the jungle to the Mayan village and snorkelled in one cenote, swam in another, ziplined over a large lake and canoed back, then swam in a final one before having lunch in the village. It was a great experience all round, even though they tried to sell us one photo for $40, or $70 for dozens on a USB stick - we weren't expecting photos so weren't going to pay those prices. If they priced them more reasonably I'm sure they'd sell more. The snorkels and lifejackets were all in good repair, with full-face snorkels available to those that wanted to try them. The staff were all professional and well organised. There was a little supervised cliff-jumping into some cenotes too. Facilities were good, although toilets were a little basic for some (long drop) Definitely recommended, but take your own camera.

Mirador de Muna

This place is located at the yucatan peninsula and is the highest part. We offer ecological tours to the jungle. We have rooms for rent but also you can camp.

Reviewed By dcrrwall - Houston, United States

My wife and I and another couple are visiting Hacienda Xixim between Muna and Opichen. Before visiting the spectacular archeological site at Uxmal, we stopped at Mirador (suggested by a local resident). It was nothing to look at from the road, but it was fantastic. There is a one room shop/gallery filled with locally-produced Mayan jewelry and crafts. Not your usual tourist souvenirs. Nicely designed and unique pieces of jewelry and Mayan themed crafts. One specialty is beautifully carved dried decorative gourds. They also have beautiful obsidian pieces and handmade ceremonial drums. Good prices and a very personable owner, Pedro. The grounds also has a botanic garden and picnic area, as well as a neat cave to explore. One of our favorite parts was Pedro’s exhibit of stingless bees. Loved our visit. Highly recommended!!!
