Yichang (Chinese: 宜昌; old postal name 'Ichang') is a prefecture-level city located in western Hubei province, China. It is the second largest city in the province after the capital, Wuhan. The Three Gorges Dam is located within its administrative area, in Yiling District. At the 2010 census, its population was 4,059,686 inhabitants whom 1,350,150 lived in the built-up (or metro) area made of Yiling, Xiling, Wujiagang and Dianjun urban districts as Xiaoting District are not yet urbanized.

This was an excursion I took part in from my cruise ship. The scenery was amazing and everything was peaceful. We weren't allowed to disembark for the day, but just the boat tour around was enough. Our tour guide was very informative as well. She told us about the culture and history of the people living in the area. The best time to go would be about October or November if you really want to see the fall leaves.

From the boat we transferred to a ferry and then when the gorges became smaller as we headed up stream we switched to a sampan. There is little doubt that some of the attractions along the sampan tour are staged but that doesn't mean they are bad and the scenery is pretty special. The cliff burial caves are also interesting

With all the natural beauty China has to offer at times you just have to admire the scale of the man made achievements too. The 3 Gorges dam project is on a scale that is mind boggling. 600+km of reservoir, 1.3 million inhabitants relocated, ship lift, loch system, flood mitigation and the power generation. This is a serious achievement accomplished by a lot of hard working people. Well worth a visit and the outdoor escalators made the ascent easy. Like all major attractions in China there are crowds but that is China so you need to adapt and not complain!
