Things to do in Wisconsin, United States: The Best Science Museums

June 23, 2021 Florencio Paulino

When you think “adventure travel” you probably think of far-flung places like Belize and Alaska—not Wisconsin. But if you’re an outdoor adventurer, you’ll find plenty of places to explore in Wisconsin. A vacation in Wisconsin can put you close to the Kettle Moraine State Forest, which has excellent biking trails. Or choose Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands—kayakers will love exploring Lake Superior’s many caves and shipwrecks.

Packers fans don’t wear those cheese-wedge hats for nothing! Foodies will love tasting as many of Wisconsin’s artisanal cheeses as possible. Either drive from cheesemaker to cheesemaker, or choose a Wisconsin vacation in a town with a good farmers’ market—then the cheesemakers bring their wares to you. And what goes better with artisanal cheese than craft beer? In Milwaukee, visit the Lakefront and Sprecher Breweries for tours and tastings.

Wisconsin Dells is a classic family vacation destination. A vacation in Wisconsin Dells will put you close to all the excitement—you’ll have to tear the kids away from the theme parks, wave pools and water parks in Wisconsin Dells!

Lake Geneva boasts clean beaches, golf, and a small-town feel that definitely appeals to city dwellers—it’s a popular getaway for residents of Chicago.

One of the only "small-town" children's museums in the nation, the Black Earth Children's Museum (BECM) is a unique and enriching place that inspires discovery, creativity and community! Designed and built with input from the local community , BECM is truly a community space. Exhibits are designed with a focus on reflecting the local culture and environment to promote learning and appreciation. The museum offers engaging and unique play experiences throughout 7,000 square feet of the historic Patron's Mercantile Co-Op Building. BECM's exhibits are designed primarily for children ages birth to 10 but offer excitement for all ages! In addition, we will be offering a wide variety of programs and events , such as skill development workshops for middle school and high school students, toddler music and fun events for the whole family.

Interactive hands-on fun active educational things to do. Easy on adults because kids are so engaged seeing, touching, hearing, climbing, exploring & if needed resting while not being excessively loud. Birthday party rooms, musical instruments to bang on, lots of light & color. A happy place for all. One of the best indoor kid destinations I've ever visited.

This small museum on the second floor of the geology building (a couple blocks from Camp Randall Stadium) provides a fascinating look at the rocks underneath your feet. It starts with a small exhibit on meteors and meteorites - including video of the 2010 meteor that exploded over southern Wisconsin and several examples of meteorites from that strike as well as a general discussion of the various types of meteors with again examples of the resulting meteorites from around the world. Next is an extensive display of minerals including many beautiful crystals, colors, etc. - indeed the example of pyrite "suns" naturally grown in a slab of black slate looks more like modern art than a natural specimen. Visitors are next led into a room equipped with a black light to show a wall full of examples minerals that glow in UV light - very 1960s. This room leads to another small room modeled after a cave to illustrate the difference between stalactites and stalagmites. The remaining main gallery looks at fossils from the microscopic to dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. Here again, some of the natural specimens looks more like art than science - for example, the fossilized school of sea lilies struck us as something that would look just as good in an art museum as in a geology exhibit. There is also a unique complete example of a fossilized diving bird from 80 million years ago, as well as a large hadrosaur and a bizarre large armored mammal from South America. We spent about an hour here (and this wasn't our first visit) and found it enlightening to say the least. You can even take home (for a small price) some examples of some of minerals and fossils that they have for sale - the museum itself is free.

My mother and I attended a writing conference here in the spring of 2019 and were so impressed with the building, staff and gobsmacking views. We wish this would've been around when we first starting coming to Egg Harbor 40 years ago. Please let the Kress family know how much we appreciate this place...I even love jogging by the entrance and oogling the sparkly tree sculpture. What a gift!
