Things to do in Wisconsin, United States: The Best Farms

September 10, 2021 Venice Greaves

When you think “adventure travel” you probably think of far-flung places like Belize and Alaska—not Wisconsin. But if you’re an outdoor adventurer, you’ll find plenty of places to explore in Wisconsin. A vacation in Wisconsin can put you close to the Kettle Moraine State Forest, which has excellent biking trails. Or choose Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands—kayakers will love exploring Lake Superior’s many caves and shipwrecks.

Packers fans don’t wear those cheese-wedge hats for nothing! Foodies will love tasting as many of Wisconsin’s artisanal cheeses as possible. Either drive from cheesemaker to cheesemaker, or choose a Wisconsin vacation in a town with a good farmers’ market—then the cheesemakers bring their wares to you. And what goes better with artisanal cheese than craft beer? In Milwaukee, visit the Lakefront and Sprecher Breweries for tours and tastings.

Wisconsin Dells is a classic family vacation destination. A vacation in Wisconsin Dells will put you close to all the excitement—you’ll have to tear the kids away from the theme parks, wave pools and water parks in Wisconsin Dells!

Lake Geneva boasts clean beaches, golf, and a small-town feel that definitely appeals to city dwellers—it’s a popular getaway for residents of Chicago.

Visiting family in WI and wanted the kids to see a working dairy farm. What a wonderful family farm and tour. Tina was so knowledgeable, engaging, and great with kids of all ages answering questions and sharing what it’s like to be a dairy farmer. I would highly recommend Hinchley’s dairy farm to anybody! We want to come back next year and see it with their new robotic milking system up and running.

Glacial Lake Cranberries

As of 2017, a Glacial Lake Cranberries marsh tour is only available when you stay at The Stone Cottage at Glacial Lake Cranberries or at LeChateau Bed and Breakfast. Glacial Lake Cranberries has been producing cranberries for over 145 years and is one of the oldest cranberry marshes in central Wisconsin. Harvest time is the most colorful time to take pleasure in a tour and appreciate the natural beauty of the cranberry wetlands. During a guided tour you will see cranberry harvest and view a cranberry production video, cranberry memorabilia, and cranberry collectibles. Harvest begins late September and continues through October. Please call to reserve The Stone Cottage. Although harvest time is the most popular time to visit because of the beautiful fall colors complimenting the seas of floating red cranberries, every season offers our guests something special and unique to see. Whether it's hiking, biking, or birding, a stay at The Stone Cottage is your unique country retreat.

Very informative! Toured the area learning how cranberries are grown and harvested. There's lot to growing these little rubies! Purchased some items from the little store. Watched a video and went on a tour van to see the fields and area. I would highly encourage you to visit and learn about cranberry growing and harvesting. A lot of history here for sure!

If you have kids or not , the Farm is a must stop for fun for all ! Baby goats,& baby lambs are all over the area as you walk out of the milk barn with your baby bottle of milk ! Tip , get there before 1030 am as they usually cut off the milk bottle feeding before noon !!! Don't bother with the bags of corn because you will be surrounded by baby goats for that bottle of milk in your hand when you walk out of the milk barn !!! Tip: If you are a couple go into the entrance a couple minutes apart ! Reason being they ration the coupons one per group for the milk ! No coupon no milk, in the milk barn! These baby goats will drink that bottle of milk so fast it will amaze you and the kids ! They have all sorts of other attractions like incubator with hatching chicks, adult goats and sheep, hen house ,and a Brahma bull all behind enclosed areas for each ! Make sure your phone is charged & camera ready to go ! Have fun , I know your kids will !

My husband and I visited La Clare Farms as part of an autumn "date day". We had a delightful experience...and we're already looking forward to returning. Sweet goats greeted us in their pen outside, and an array of delicious food, wine and beer were "waiting" for us in the shop and cafe. My husband savored the Jalepeno and Chevre burger, while I enjoyed the seasonal Local Apple Salad featuring walnuts, Evalon cheese and a sweet caramel vinagrette. I'm SO excited to find yet another wonderful "foodie spot" so near our home ... and I'm looking forward to enjoying the goat's milk products and wine we bought.
