King Alfred's Statue

Reviewed By 236traceya - Havant, United Kingdom

Passing through Pewsey on my way to Marlborough i saw this amazing Statue of the late, Great King Alfred and just had to stop to get a closer look, plus some photographs. The roads get extremely busy making it quite dangerous to get to him, but it was worth it to find out that this statue was erected in 1913 making it much older than the one in Winchester, a great find but such a shame it wasn't put somewhere much more worthy of him for more people to enjoy, such as by the river & seating area, as it would be safer & much quieter to view.

Avebury Stone Circle

This mysterious stone circle is thought to have been constructed in Neolithic times between 2500 to 2000 BC by The Beaker people, who might have played a major role in the formation of another eerie ancient site at Stonehenge.

Reviewed By F5904TEianm - Ashbourne, United Kingdom

In many ways more impressive than Stonehenge, and such a lot to see. It's great to get up close and walk amongst and indeed touch the stones, also a beautiful picturesque village with pub, church, manor house and museum barn. Easily enough for a half day, or perhaps a full day. If you enjoy walking and exploring our history, a 5 mile circuit also taking in Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow makes a full and fine day!

West Kennet Long Barrow

Reviewed By 71flojo - Newbury, United Kingdom

Nice 10-15 min walk from lay by mostly uphill to the Long Barrow which has large stones at the entrance where you can squeeze past to enter the chambers. It is very dark inside but can see several rooms branching off. Worth a look inside. Standing on the top of the site is a lovely view of Silbury Hill in the distance.

Longleat

Reviewed By Speckycatlady - Cardiff, United Kingdom

With endless attractions, you need at least one full day to visit Longleat and explore,. The Safari is great fun and the free Safari app provides an informative commentary while viewing the animals - make sure to unscrew your aerial before you visit the monkey enclosure! We spent at least an hour driving around the safari. Enjoy a boat trip to feed the sealions, handle some exotic creatures in the Jungle Kingdom, pet some farm animals in the petting farm, feed nectar to the lorikeets and experience the bat cave. Longleat country house is beautiful to explore, as are the grounds. Round off the day with food at one of the many food establishments on site, and take a train ride around the outskirts of the park before leaving.

This National Trust property benefits from its own beauty, informative room guides and a central and stunning location right in the cathedral close. It also is blissfully free from hordes of tourists so that one can truly appreciate the rooms at one's leisure. There are informative pamphlets as well as helpful volunteers in each room who are knowledgeable and welcoming. Delightful garden and team room at the back of the house. Not to be missed!

The Close

Reviewed By wiltsdee

If you enjoy history, architecture and browsing, Salisbury Cathedral Close is one of the most spacious Cathedral Closes in England. The Cathedral itslf has the tallest Cathedral spire in England and when the weather is favourable a tour of the Cathedral, including part of the spire may be made. However, recently, during a storm, the wind was blowing at over 90 miles per hour at the top of the spire, so of course there would have been no tours then! The Cathedral itself is so interesting, that one could visit many times and never tire of it. Music is magnificent too. Magna Carta is an original document, displayed in a secure setting. The workshops may be visited at times, where stonemasons, lead and glass workers and other skilled tradespeople work on repairing and constructing ecclesiastical items. The Cathedral has a cafe. Other places of interest within Salsibury Cathedral Close include Mompesson House (National Trust), Salisbury Museum and The Rifles Museum, incorporating the history of The Berkshires, too. All these places have cafes. Aarundells was the home of the late Sir Edward Heath, Prime Minister. The back garden leads down to the river. If you visit The Close, there are always artworks on display in and around the grounds. Ideally you would need to visit several times to enjoy everything!.

Cherhill White Horse and Monument

Reviewed By 536karlm

Visited yesterday. Great little walk of around an hour (reasonable footwear required, bottle of water optional). Views from the top are amazing (we were fortunate to have a good clear day) and the size of the monument is really quite impressive. You can do a small loop circuit to avoid going up and down the same way. Also saw a set of 4 ( yes, four) hawks all hovering in the air simultaneously hunting for prey! A pretty rare sight in itself.
