A lovely local, canal side walking area. The end of the old St Helens canal, at the edge of the River Mersey. Plenty waterfowl, plenty of friendly swans in particular, that enjoy being fed. A local mooring location for many different types of boats, marooned on the old canal system, which now goes under the new Mersey Gateway road bridge. Giving walkers and cyclists miles of canalside walks, with great views across the Mersey to the Cheshire side of the river.

A beautiful, relaxing, local riverside walking area. It was many years ago the local council's household refuse tip. But has been brilliantly reclaimed and superbly maintained. It has a warden's office and cafe, which is run by volunteers and friends of the pastures. Unfortunately not always open, but posters give updates of the birds and wildfowl noted on the river and areas around it. At the far right hand, down river end, is a bird hide, hidden in the bushes, where on good days waterfowl can be seen across the marshes, and many smaller birds can be seen on feeders filled by bird lovers. Walking to the left and upstream direction, you can ramble for some miles. Under the Widnes to Runcorn, old rail and road bridges, around Victoria promenade, past the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre - a science and technology museum in Widnes by Spike Island, and then if really fit, walk the canal, under the new Mersey Gateway road bridge - a stunning new bridge - and upto Warrington. Obviously if you're on a bike, it's a cracking day out on your bike/bikes. Very popular with couples walking, cyclists, families, dog walkers. All age groups and abilities in the immediate riverside area, but restricted to only able bodied people upto the bridge, and then steep zigzag wooden stairs after the beautiful bridge across Ditton Brook, some mile or so upstream. Once visited, never forgotten, a return over many times can be enjoyed.
