This is a religious place of Roman Catholic believers. A Shrine built after the 2nd world war as a gratitude to mother Mary for her intercession in protecting Sri Lanka from the acts of war. Very tranquil place to visit, meditate and venerate.

Legends say, a church dedicated to San Jose – Saint Joseph or in our own tong ‘San Juse’ - was constructed in Pamunugama during the Portuguese Regime many centuries ago. According to an old document which describes the history of Pamunugama, there was a Roman Catholic Church in the southern part of Pamunugama, about a quarter of a mile distance away from Sarakkuwa.

The High Mass held on 13th June on the feast day of St. Anthony without following the traditional procession. The historic Catholic shrine dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua will celebrate the 185th feast of the Saint on 13th June 2019. St. Anthony’s Shrine which is among the most popular Catholics churches and both catholic and non-Catholics have their faith in St Anthony. Current Administrator of Saint Anthony’s Church is Rev. Fr.
