Hugging the German border, Western Poland is made up of the West Pomeranian, Lubusz and Lower Silesian Voivodships (Provinces), the largest cities of which are Szczecin, Gorzow Wielkopolski and Wroclaw respectively. Both Szczecin and Wroclaw are beautiful medieval cities with many popular attractions. Drawno National Park, part of the massive Drawska Forest, lies at the convergence of West Pomerania, Lubusz and Greater Poland. Lubusz is also home to the bird-filled Ujscie Warty National Park.

The wooden churches of southern Little Poland represent outstanding examples of the different aspects of medieval church-building traditions in Roman Catholic culture. Built using the horizontal log technique, common in eastern and northern Europe since the Middle Ages. The wooden church style of the region originated in the late Medieval, the late sixteenth century, and began with Gothic ornament and polychrome detail, but because they were timber construction, the structure, general form, and feeling is entirely different from the gothic architecture or Polish Gothic (in stone or brick). Later construction show Rococo and Baroque ornamental influence. The form of these Roman Catholic churches is deeply influenced by the Greco-Catholic and Orthodox presence in the region.

We were looking forward to our guided tour and were not disappointed. It was wonderful to get so close to history. Every point of our tour meaningful, well explained and many of our questions were answered. Our tour guide’s English was excellent. We really appreciated professionalism and time management. Everything (excluding street parking, which is clearly out of anyone’s control) was very well planned.

Visit the site of the most famous escape of World War II from a German prisoner-of-war camp that went down in history as “The Great Escape”. In a tiny compound 600 men worked for a year in secrecy on the tunnels named Tom, Dick, and Harry. Finally, on the night of 24th of March 1944, 76 prisoners managed to escape from the camp through the Harry tunnel but soon after 73 were recaptured during the chase. Outraged, Hitler ordered to shoot dead fifty of them which was an appalling abrogation of the Geneva Convention. Find out more about those dramatic events at the Museum of Allied POW Camps in Żagań, visit the grounds of Stalag Luft III and the memorial to the brave airmen who paid the highest price for an escape they considered a soldier's duty.

I was a bit dubious about booking this tour as I done so via Viator and it only had a few reviews at the time, but this was the only operator offering an early morning departure. The communication before hand was superb confirming the pick up time that I had requested. The driver on the day was on time and very friendly with the whole tour extremely well organised and transport (minivan) very comfortable. Our tour guide at Auschwitz was absolutely amazing for one of, if not the most, emotional tours I’ve participated in. We had our driver waiting for us at the end to take us back and never felt rushed. I have recommended this tour via this operator to others and would not hesitate to use Poland Active for other activities in the future. Thank you.

The most important attractions of Zakopane and the famous rafting on the Dunajec gorge, that is everything you need to see in Podhale. Fantastic location makes Zakopane the best viewpoint of the Tatra Mountains. It is a wonderful place to relax at any time of the year. In addition, the Dunajec Gorge is one of the most beautiful breakthroughs on our continent and it forms the largest tourist attraction on a European scale. On the way, great views of the Pieniny, Czorsztyn Lake and castles in Niedzica and Czorsztyn.

We were picked up on time by Wojciech. He was a fantastic guide. From start to finish we were looked after perfectly. It is quite a long drive but absolutely worth it. The scenery is outstanding. We enjoyed seeing traditional wooden houses and 15th century Church of St Michael the Archangel. Rafting in Dunajec was pleasant. The rafts hold 12 people and it was quite busy. I recommend if you visit Krakow allow yourself 6 days as there is so much to see and do.
