When you visit this area, just off the N5 Dublin to Westport road, you can experience the home of Celtic Warrior Queen Maeve, the Goddess Morrigan, the Cattle Raid of Cooley, and seat of Gaelic Royalty – this is the Land of Legends for over 5,000 years. Here you can walk in the footsteps of the ancestors, imagine yourself transported back through time to the age of warriors and heroes, and enjoy this fascinating slice of Irish Heritage. The Rathcroghan Complex, with over 200 ancient monuments, is the historical royal capital of Connacht, Ireland’s Western province. We have been nominated to World Heritage Status, and Rathcroghan Visitor Centre offers a BRAND NEW Rathcroghan and Medieval Tulsk exhibition (open April 2014) with fully insured guided tours tailored to suit you; whether your interest is History, Genealogy, Literature, Archaeology, Heritage, Spirituality, or Mythology. Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, in the Medieval village of Tulsk, provides professional guided tours with a qualified historian/archaeologist; plus self-guide information, maps and advice; family friendly activities, workshops and special events, and full café facilities. You can shop for unique hand crafted gifts, an unparalleled specialist book selection, and expert advice no matter what your interest in Irish Culture, History or Heritage.
The exhibition is very good, with an impressive bookshop for history lovers, the cafe has very good coffee and cake and the best of all is the guided tour by Mike McCarthy. It is excellent! He weaves together myth, archaeology, history, folklore into a great story. Very interesting and entertaining. The guided tour is a must for anyone interested in the story of Maeve.

The award winning Heritage Centre is the ideal place to discover history the fun way. The centre’s ‘Medieval Experience’ provides visitors of all ages the opportunity to be part of history with its medieval costumes. Become a Knight, Lord and Lady of the Manor. Discover your inner Robin Hood with the centre’s Have-A-Go Archery activity and engage with history with interactive exhibits of weapons and armor from the Middle Ages. Other exhibits include the medieval dungeon, the Market Street and models of this ancient walled town. Relax in the picnic area and explore the medieval maze too. The centre is also the home of the towns original Mace & Seal, the oldest of their kind in Ireland. Guided tours are available for all visitors to the centre. Discover the best-preserved medieval town in Ireland and visit a place immortalized by the song ‘The Fields of Athenry’ as a town rich in history and culture.
We decided to go for the full experience which was amazingly good value and not that expensive. Everyone had fun getting dressed up in period costumes. Knights, Executioner and Lady-in-waiting, etc. It was a fun and engaging way to learn about the medieval history of Athenry. Our guides were very knowledgeable and provided lots of information, both horrible and humorous. To finish off the visit we tried our hand at Archery, which even our 9 year daughter enjoyed. It definitely worth making the trip to Athenry just to do this.

The Visitor Centre for Ballycroy National Park, Irelands sixth National Park. The National Park was established in 1998 and covers a vast area of mountaineous terrain and blanket bog. The Visitor Centre was opened in 2009 and is located along the N59 road between Mulranny and Bangor Erris. The main body of the National Park is 3 km to the east of the Visitor Centre.
A wonderful place to visit. The visitors' centre is really impressive - bright, spacious and spotless. The staff were fantastic and very helpful. A particular mention of Nicola in the cafe. She was really pleasant and informative. We enjoyed the 2 km loop walk with stunning views. We did not have time to explore the National Park further, unfortunately. Highly recommend a visit to Ballycroy.
