Virginia can make American history come alive. Visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, tour Civil War battlefields, explore the living history museum at Williamsburg… the possibilities are endless (if the kids object, break up the historical sightseeing with a visit to Busch Gardens). Arlington, site of Arlington National Cemetery, is just across the Potomac River from all the major sites in D.C. In addition to beaches and historical attractions, Virginia has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts. Active families will love the Blue Ridge Highlands, where hiking, canoeing and tubing are just a few of the activities offered. Couples might enjoy a romantic mountain cabin in Virginia after a day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park.

You haven’t fully appreciated Alexandria if you haven’t been to its downtown Waterfront. Whether you tour the Torpedo Factory’s spaces filled with artisans, watch the coming and going of the ships, feed the sea gulls or enjoy a meal at the Chart House, there is something for everyone.

This three-mile concrete promenade is always busy with bicyclists, strollers, diners and people-watchers. During the summer, three oceanfront stages offer nightly entertainment.
Virginia Beach Boardwalk (ironically it's a cement walk unlike the boardwalks in New Jersey) goes along 3 miles of beach, has a bike path or you can just stroll along, watch the surfers, and people watch. there are several outdoor restaurants, nautical sculptures, including King Neptune--great for a photo op or use him as a meeting place when you have a large group. As you meander down the boardwalk, check out the souvenir shops, and there are plenty of places to shop on Atlantic Avenue which is the first street as you leave the boardwalk--all very convenient. At Christmas time, you can drive on the boardwalk and see all the decorations and lights.

We took a look at the Memorial walkway which has bricks purchased for donations. LOVE chairs are great. Nice pavilions and water views. Easy access from Main St.

We took multiple trips to this beach area. It was so clean and everyone was respecting everyone's space. This was during the pandemic.

It is hard to find a better way to entertain anglers in the family who are a bit bored of sitting on the beach for hours and are searching desperately for signs of fish out in the distance, or who have become frustrated with surf fishing, than to go to this fishing pier. Reasonable cost, an impressive cleaning station with running water, benches, and lots of friendly fellow anglers - we had some guys give us bait - as well as their crab ring nets - when they had packed up for the day, and we also got help in bringing up two clearnose skates. Besides the two skates - one of which snapped the line before it could be landed - we caught an undersized flounder that we threw back, plus at least 20 crabs that grabbed our bait - squid - and dropped off the hook well before we could reel them in. The skates were particularly interesting to try to land given the distance between the water surface and the pier, but also their strength. As far as the crab-catching was concerned, we had little luck even with some chicken pieces, but others on the pier found that the hungry ones were almost exclusively egg-bearing females, so very few crabs that were being caught with the crab ring nets were actually kept.

Founded in 1949. Virginia Beach Fishing Pier has been family owned since it’s inception. The pier and shops have been recently upgraded from fresh new colors throughout shops and pier as well as some much needed repairs to the pier. New fish cleaning station with hopes of adding one more closer to the end. New bar sitting area along the portion of pier over the beach. Great place to sit and enjoy the view with your favorite beverage and food from the snack bar. Even have weekly power washing on the pier to help alleviate old bait and pigeon poop! Come on out for a visit.
While walking the beach, it's a must to stop by the pier. So enjoyed watching the people fishing and catching all sorts of interesting marine life. Yes, we saw someone catch a shark! Also, have a snack at the snack bar while you're there.

Nice long walk to the end of the pier overlooking the beautiful Chesapeake Bay with plenty of birds...and the fishing is good too!
