Things to do in Virginia, United States: The Best Observation Decks & Towers

August 27, 2021 Jana Sager

Virginia can make American history come alive. Visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, tour Civil War battlefields, explore the living history museum at Williamsburg… the possibilities are endless (if the kids object, break up the historical sightseeing with a visit to Busch Gardens). Arlington, site of Arlington National Cemetery, is just across the Potomac River from all the major sites in D.C. In addition to beaches and historical attractions, Virginia has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts. Active families will love the Blue Ridge Highlands, where hiking, canoeing and tubing are just a few of the activities offered. Couples might enjoy a romantic mountain cabin in Virginia after a day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park.

Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935, the Woodstock Tower Observation Site offers a stunning 360-degree view of the town of Woodstock, Fort Valley and the Seven Bends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River at over 2,000 feet. The area is now part of the George Washington National Forest and abounds in hiking trails and areas for camp sites. From I-66, take exit 6 at Front Royal. Turn south on US 340/522 toward the town of Front Royal. Turn right on VA 55 west to Waterlick. Turn left onto SR 678 south and continue to Detrick. Turn right onto SR 758 or Woodstock Tower Road for about four miles to the top of the mountain. The footpath to the tower is on your left. Be aware, Woodstock Tower Road is not accessible to trailers, motor homes or RVs due to curves and steep grades.

Big Walker Lookout

Big Walker Lookout is the designated overlook of the Big Walker Mountain National Forest Scenic Byway that is on US-52 between exit 52 & exit 47 of I-77 in Virginia between Bland, Va & Wytheville, Va. It is just 12 miles north of I-81 from exit 70. This is one of the few accessable places in the east where you have a 360 degree view of the mountain valleys & farm-scapes of the Appalachian Mountains. Big Walker Lookout features the BW Country Store with 25+ artisans & crafters' handmade works. It is a Crooked Road Affiliated Venue that features free, live concerts every Saturady & Sunday from May through October. We also feature artists & crafters demonstrating their talents on the front porch every weekend throughout the spring, summer & fall. We feature homemade ice cream, farm fresh fudge & delicious chocolates. It is a great hiking, biking and trail biking trail-head for beginner & expert adventurers. Big Walker is a historic pass where, during the Civil War, Molly Tynes traveled to Wytheville to warn of the impending Toland's Raid. It is a Virginia Birding and Wildlife view area and a raptor migration path. Come by for a visit. We are open year round 10-5 and later in the summer.

I originally visited here in the summer and liked it so much I decided to stop again this past October. The day was clear and almost cloudless and the vista from the Big Walker Lookout parking lot was breathtaking. No photo can quite capture the breathtaking view from the summit. I didn't climb the tower this visit but I went into the store and had lunch. They got a great meal deal that includes a good hot dog with all the fixins including chili, choice of chips, drink & ice cream cone for $5. After lunch I decided to take the 1/4 mile trail from the tower to a gigantic rock formation called Monster Rock. It is aptly named. It's really worth seeing and is a nice short hike in the woods atop the mountain. I saw the sign post on my first trip and decided on seeing it on this visit. On return to the parking lot, I went back into the store to pick up some Big Walker Lookout private label jams and jellies packed in old fashioned Mason jars. I selected a jar of blueberry preserves to take home and it was very good. This is a great alternate off I-77 if you're looking to get away briefly from the hectic interstate and really isn't much out of your way whether travelling north or south. You'll just lose a little time so just look at it as a most unique rest stop. The view from the top of Big Walker Mountain is well worth any small amount of time lost on the interstate. You can't appreciate the mountain driving through the Big Walker Mountain tunnel on the interstate. You've got to get off and take Rt. 52 up to the Lookout Tower & Country store to discover something special.
