I had the pleasure to tour the Pirohov Estate in the winter when I basically had the grounds to myself. The estate on its own is beautiful to walk around. The displays inside the buildings tell a story that most westerners probably do not know. I was amazed at Pirohov’s story - from entering university at a very early age to developing orthopedic aids for fracture healing and pioneering the use of anesthesia for soldiers during the Crimean war. He was a truly a fascinating man and I’m glad I learned about him. If you do not speak Ukrainian or Russian you will need a translator/guide to fully engage with the site’s exhibits. I highly recommend you visit!

A visit to the Vinnytsia Regional Lore Museum is a great way to learn about the history of Vinnytsia and the surrounding region. For westerners: this is a mix between what we’d call a natural history museum and a cultural history museum. The end result is a total picture of the Vinnytsia Oblast (e.g. state/province). If you don’t speak the language, it would be to get an interpreter/guide so you can fully appreciate exhibits. My personal favorites were some of the historical objects from around the turn of the 20th century and some of the interpretive displays about early history/settlement. Definitely worth a visit if you have more than a day in Vinnytsia!
