Entry to the site is free above ground where you can follow the heritage walk among historic buildings. ake the family on a journey back in time at the State Coal Mine in Wonthaggi. This unique attraction in Gippsland is the only historic coal mine experience in the Southern Hemisphere. The underground tour is very well run, guide was very entertaining and knowledgeable, well worth the visit, above ground is self guided and full of information. Lunch in the cafe topped off the visit. Definitely recommend. Free to wander above ground, but pay for underground tour.

Absolutely brilliant tour. Greg has put in thousands of hours of time researching the history of gold mining at Yackandandah and followed the path of some of the most notable characters during the town's 30 year long gold rush. He's personally qualified in several government regulated industries solely to be able to share his passion for this fascinating historic period and bought a gold mine! You couldn't wish for more detail or knowledge on a subject and I can't recommend this tour highly enough, next time we're close to Yackandandah we'll certainly attend the your again.

An authentic underground goldmine that is heritage listed. Tour groups of up to 30 people are escorted by an experienced guide. The Mine is well it, plenty of room and well ventilated. It is very safe. Tours operate daily except Christmas Day at 1:30pm - and at 12noon and 3pm on weekends, public holidays and school holidays.
We first visited this location in 2017. Returned in 2020 with my brother who is visiting us from sunny Sri Lanka. Walhalla is a great place to visit with lots of history. In short this is one of the townships which got electricity at the same time as Melbourne. But then it was the ghost town which got electricity as the last place in the same region. You would Wonder what does that means. Please visit and experience what happened.

We thought that the Rushworth area including Balaclava Mine would be just a quick drive around in maybe an hour but how wrong we were. It was just amazing. Loved the township and the take away shop and bakery. Many fascinating old buildings though the museum was closed due to Covid. Very friendly locals and good coffee. Went up to the observation tower in the middle of town.We followed the road up to Whroo(8km out) and just meandered around the gravel roads looking at cemetery, puddling machines and all the interesting signs and information boards. Had thought the Balaclava Mine might be inacessible to all but the fit but it was actually a small even walk on a well maintained (but not signposted) gravel path. Steps led up to an observation platform bcos the access down into the mine was closed but viewing was great and we saw heaps. There are actually a few viewing platforms. What a fabulous day. The area teems with gold rush info. Very informative. Also a very accessible neat campground.

Yackandandah in autumn is spectacular. We spent time walking the varies walks and trails including the Yackandandah mining gorge trail, we also spent time wondering the streets of Yackandandah enjoying all its old world charm dressed up in gorgeous autumnal colours, and cycled the Yackandandah creek cycling / walking trail. The best!!
