Royal Exhibition Building

The Royal Exhibition Building is one of the world's oldest remaining exhibition pavilions. On 1 July 2004, it became the first building in Australia to achieve a World Heritage listing. Located in Carlton Gardens, the pavilion was originally completed in 1880 for the first of two international fairs hosted by Melbourne. On May 1st, 1901, the initial Commonwealth Parliament was held here, an event commemorated in 2001, the centenary of Australian Federation. Today, with its meticulously restored interior, expansive galleries and soaring dome, the Great Hall offers an impressive setting for trade shows, fairs and cultural and community events.

Box Hill Town Hall

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

The Box Hill Town Hall dates from 1935, when this splendid town hall was the centre of a proud lower middle class suburb, hardly an Asian restaurant in sight. In these thriving older suburbs, an admirable town hall was a matter of civic pride. The Box Hill Town Hall is built in neo Grec style, a neo-Classical Revival style, which accounts to the magfiicent columns out front. The Town Hall, which is classified by the National Trust, is a great venue for community events, which draw people frrom all over Melbourne. Art lovers will find the Artspace Gallery interesting, with its collection of early Australian Impressionist paintings.

The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion

Experience the largest Buddhist stupa in the Western world. The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion situated near Bendigo, Victoria, is the same size and design as The Great Stupa of Gyantse in Tibet. It rises to a total height of 48 metres above Bendigo’s distinctive bushland, and is 50 metres wide at its base. The Great Stupa is home to many holy objects. Foremost amongst these is the magnificent Jade Buddha for Universal Peace which is the largest Buddha carved from gem quality jade in the world. Wander the Peace Park and see beautiful relics and artworks inside The Great Stupa. Learn about Buddhism, Asian culture and art. Treat yourself with an artisan gift from the shop or have a barista-style coffee and a bite to eat at StupaView Café. It’s a pet friendly site as long as your furry friend is kept on a leash.

What an amazing place to find nestled in the Australian bush land, just outside Bendigo! An astonishing blend of Eastern philosophy, nature park, temple, learning and peace! Could not recommend a stop off here more highly, to both enjoy, learn and view. The small tour of the temple was a stand out but really there wasn’t a dull second doing the self guided walk.

ANZ Bank Museum

The ANZ Banking museum has temporarily closed - however it is worth visiting the ANZ Branch next door at 388 Collins Street Melbourne Vic 3000. Completed by The English, Scottish and Australia Bank, in May 1887, the 'Gothic' Bank (as it's known) was designed by William Wardell. The building is an example of secular Gothic, the style is restrained externally, and internally graceful and ornate.

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

The ANZ Bank is the result of the merging of several British banks operating in Australia. The Gothic Bank was the banking chamber of the English, Scottish and Australian Bank (ES&A). It opened for business in 1887 and it's still a functioning bank. It's worth taking a look even if you're not an ANZ customer, it's a magnificent sight. The Esanda finance company derived its name from the ES&A Bank. In the old days, a magnificent banking chamber helped convince customers that the bank was sound.
