Norwegian settler, Bernt Ronning, established his homestead in 1910. Most settlers abandoned the area over the years, but Ronning continued making his life here into the early 1960's, working as a trapper, fisherman, and camp cook, while maintaining his prized garden. During the earliest years, Bernt Ronning cleared over five acres of rainforest in order to plant the wilderness garden of his dreams. A garden created from seeds, cuttings of trees, and exotic plants he ordered from around the world. As the years passed, the garden continued to grow in size and variety. In the late 60's and into the 70's the garden nearly disappeared under the encroaching brush and alders. Many of the trees grew into unusual shapes as they struggled to find their way to the light. The daffodils stopped blooming under a thick canopy of dense salmon berry bushes. Most of the hundreds of flowers in the terraced beds were lost. Today, the garden has once again been freed from the invading rainforest.

Be captivated by the Magic of Christmas with its decorations, expansive lighting and outdoor ice skating rink. Top off the day with a ride on the carousel and a great meal. Come see why we’ve been designated a National Historic Site.
You need at least 4 hours to take in this spectacular experience. Don't miss this opportunity! Gardens include the mind-blowing quarry, the Italian garden with reflecting pool, the rose garden, the Japanese garden, the dahlia garden, with sculptures and surprises at every turn, and many small inlets for solitude, reflection and appreciation. We were lucky to hear the Victoria Symphony rehearsing while we strolled under magnificent trees and took in the breathtaking views. This is a world-class garden.

As you walk into the gift shop, you are welcome by the most amazing ant colony, at first it’s hard to identify what you are looking at, since it is such a captivating spectacle... then all of a sudden, it hits you and you are in awww to see the difference in body size that they are capable of carrying in such an organized manner. Nature has a way of surprising you... but that’s just the beginning... as you walked through the double doors, you will actually feel as if you are in the middle of a forest. The melodies of running creeks, birds, warmer and humid climate, butterflies from all sort of colors and sizes flying freely, turtles eating flowers and humans actually smiling.... it is such a beautiful and educational place. My sever year old loved every moment we were there, she was able to explore, ask questions, feed the turtles and take lots of pictures. She didn’t want to leave... but now it is something we are looking forward to going back to.

Created by the Georgian Prince and Princess Abkhazi, this lovely garden spans just over an acre and features native Garry oaks, Japanese Maples and splendid rhododendrons.
My husband and I enjoyed the Royal Abkhazi High tea service with our two kids. They were really interested in our warm scones! The food was also unusual compared the usual plain tea sandwiches. The gardens are quite lush and interesting with a turtle pond aswell. The meal felt relaxed and they were very accommodating to us. Thank you.

Spring time is breath taken. The buzzing of the bees around the rhododendrons, the eagles rebuilding their nest, the seals fishing for Herron - mind blowing. Then you have the rhododendrons, the daffodils, the camellias. Such a welcoming of spring. The smell of homemade soup, scones and desserts will draw you into the house. Such a wonderful day!!

These gardens are a wonderful nature walk, years of effort poured into making it so delightful. The lights and choirs at Christmas make it magical. On the Victoria day weekend in May the annual Art and Blooms Festival places an original works by painters, potters, sculptors, glass blowers, original stained glass designers, garden art and other unique art forms. On the Labour Day Weekend in September they present high quality original works ... pottery, fine art, ceramics, carvings, furniture, weaving, jewelry, wrought iron, and glass combined with local musical talent scattered throughout the various groves of the grounds. It's a delight.
