The institute offers courses in basic mountaineering, rock and rope craft, disaster response, mountain search & rescue and nature guiding including bird watching. NDI is based in Kuflon, Uttarkashi and also operates from its base at Devangan Lodge, at the gateway to Nanda Devi National Park in the border district of Chamoli, Uttarakhand. The main object of NDI is to design and conduct need based adventure and outdoor education programs. Apart from training in BMC, Nanda Devi Institute is actively involved in the promotion of nature based tourism in Uttarakhand. The major focus is in capacity building of the local youth in bird watching and promotion of birding destinations. NDI is also engaged in the development of interpretive trek to Nanda Devi National Park.
