I am visiting Okinawa for a few weeks and wanted to see some history. These ruins were also referred to as Hacksaw Ridge during the Battle of Okinawa. Be sure to go by the main building on the left to get guide material and see some historic artifacts. It was great exercise. We spent a couple of yours walking around. Needle Rock is a bit more difficult to find. You have to wind your way through a cemetery and through a gate that leads to an overgrown trail. Be careful of snakes.

I took a Battle Site tour of Okinawa and the first stop was to Maeda Highlands to see Hacksaw Ridge. Obviously the movie made this popular and I've seen the movie so I was very interested in seeing this location. We stood in the exact spot that Desmond Doss rescued so many lives it was extremely interesting. It is so hard to stand here and think what happened here nearly 80 years ago, terrible tragedy on both sides. Today, this park is incredibly well done. There are several sites around to see not only Hacksaw Ridge but the site of the castle ruins, monuments, and there are stunning views of the island. I definitely did not get enough time here but I will definitely come back to explore more. Maeda Highlands is well worth exploring for so many reasons.
