In Hohenberg an der Eger, Porzellanikon’s parent building with 2,000 sqm of exhibition space in the former Director’s Villa of the family-owned company C. M. Hutschenreuther, you can discover the cultural history of porcelain from the time it was invented by Johann Friedrich Bottger and Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus. Follow the tour through the different exhibitions that tell the history of porcelain in German-speaking countries from the 18th century until “Die Wende” in 1989. Always something new Special Exhibitions cover key aspects of porcelain history from ever-changing perspectives. The museum also presents the fascinating artistic expertise and technical skill of producers past and present throughout Europe such as Meissen, Herend, Nymphenburg, Sevres and Kopenhagen, who regularly showcase their products as welcome guests.

The material of the collection is presented in the ground floor rooms of the small building, where the composer has spent the last part of his life. Altough acquainted with his art and playing his pieces myself, the surprisingly detailed personal side of his life story astonished me. It is a must for piano enthusiasts when in Bayreuth. For young (and old) visitors, a so-called Piano Hero is available to test their skills just like in Guitar Hero. Simply cool.

Really nice castle up the hill. Great view of the town from up. Museums were closed but still was able to walk around, sit and take pictures. Must visit if stopping in Kulmbach.
