Nomadic tribal heritage and modern society co-exist in the UAE, a federation of seven emirates at the southeastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula. Look beyond the desert that consumes four-fifths of its area and you'll find UAE capital Abu Dhabi, an oil-rich city of skyscrapers, parks and malls, and Dubai, with its split personality of luxury resorts and covered marketplaces, upscale boutiques and local artisans. For a break from urban sprawl, journey over rolling red sand dunes into the Hatta Mountains, where the 200-year-old Sharia Mosque sits amid 30 restored buildings of sandalwood and mud.

A lovely area, don’t get scared by the start of the road - any car would take you through - the road is partial (most) concrete but also partially rocky road but a sedan would work well. It seems in the middle on the mountains, although quite close to Fujairah city. It’s a rural quiet area and it gives you a feel of the countryside in this area of the world. The fort itself is the house of the great grandfather of the present Fujairah Ruler and is surrounded by the ruins of the small village that existed there. The guide (security guard) was very welcoming, very knowledgeable, and lovely overall. It is a good place to visit that takes you back in time and also closer to nature.

Lovely visit to the fort. Calm, peaceful and friendly staff. Worth a visit and lots of history to read about.

Masafi Fort is located in the eponymous city, in the Al Hajar Mountains range, in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. Masafi Fort was built in the 19th century to protect the oasis, connecting the eastern and western sides of the Al Hajar massif along the road. The fort has preserved ancient underground water systems. The fort is in excellent condition. This is probably the best-preserved fort in the United Arab Emirates, of all that I have seen. A security guard is sitting at the entrance and you will have to sign up for a guestbook.

Fujairah Fort lies in the city of the same name, in the emirate of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. Although called a fort, I would categorize Fujairah Fort as a castle. It differs distinctively from all other forts in the United Arab Emirates. Research showed that Fujairah Fort was built between 1500 and 1550. That would be during Portuguese rule over the area, so I think it was probably built by the Portuguese. It was built on a 20 meters high hill, overseeing the city and the coast, as it is only situated around 2 km from the coast. Fujairah Fort has an irregular ground plan which follows the outline of the rock it was built on. It has 3 round towers and one square tower, which probably served as a keep. In 1925 Fujairah Fort was restored for a first time. Around 1960 one of the round towers and the square one had collapsed. But they were rebuilt during another restoration between 1998 and 2000. Fujairah Fort can now be visited during daytime.
