An excellent way to visit and explore the Amazon rainforest in a safe and secure setting. The lodge gave you a great feel to how the locals live. All beds have mosquito nets, rooms have all your basic amenities such as wardrobes, toilet, shower and balcony. The showers are cold but you’ll appreciate that in the humid environment! The food provided by the lodge was fantastic. It’s all sourced locally and is very healthy. We ate different kinds of fish with fresh vegetables such as plantain. The tours were structured very well to allow you enough free time to relax after a long day exploring! We saw pink & grey river dolphins, sloths, an anaconda, many kinds of monkeys, peiche fish and many more. We fished for piranha and cooked them for dinner. Overall if you’re a nature fan and don’t mind living without an internet connection for a few days this tour is definitely for you! Our guide Alejandro was brilliant. Check out my YouTube channel spring_aroundtheworld for a detailed video of our experience!

The city tour was AWFUL. Our guide Diego was unprofessional, our van had 15 people and NO ac or windows he didn’t seem concerned that we were all uncomfortable. Rather he sat up front with the driver listening to music and didn’t interact with the clients. There were very few times during the hour car rides when he would point anything out at all; and when we asked questions he gave minimal responses. His knowledge on the sites appeared limited and he majority of topics circled back to global warming or aliens. He shouldn’t have this job. Period. The entire group was disappointed, at least we were all able to connect through that. He wasn’t physically able to Guide us through some of the physical sites, as a result we were received minimal information about these areas. So incredibly disappointed. We had a great experience with the trekking portion with Fredy Zapata, please see post on that.

This trek was an amazing experience! Eduardo was an excellent tour guide and very knowledgeable about everything we encountered. He answered all our questions and even helped with interpreting at times. Our trek was the first week of January, which was also a peak time for COVID-19. Eduardo was diligent with Covid precautions each day of the trek. He made sure to remind us to wear our masks in small towns, sanitize our hands regularly and prompted us to use our face shields when needed. We felt very safe and well taken care of with Eduardo as our tour guide. The downhill biking was thrilling and relatively easy. The intermittent rain made the experience even better. The company bus/van follows everyone as they bike down the mountain. The rafting was initially scary, but a very fun experience. The company went over all the safety precautions and provided all the necessary gear. 5 minutes after being on the raft, your fear will subside, and you will love every minute of it! There is a FULL day of hiking on this trek. It’s not a simple nature walk either. I would say more than half of the hike is at an incline. If you aren’t an avid hiker, I would definitely train for this trek. The views are beautiful and the foliage is vibrant. You will be exhausted after this full day of hiking, but you will feel so proud that you did it! The zip-lining was so fun! A little bit of a hike to get to some of the spots, but well worth it once you are flying above a river and through the jungle. The food throughout the trek was delicious! You always had enough to eat and it was always fresh! I didn’t expect to be so pleased with the meals, but I can honestly say the food was a trek highlight! On the final day, Eduardo accompanied us to Machu Picchu and did a wonderful job at explaining its history and architecture. This trek was an adventure of a lifetime! Things to know: - The tour company can safely store your luggage. - Pack light, you will have to carry everything you need for the 4-day trek. We each carried a backpack. (If you are lucky, you may be able to have someone take your backpack to the next city on the hiking day. Be sure to ask your guide about this.) -The showers might be cold. -If you are scared of heights, this might not be the trek for you. - You NEED sunscreen and mosquito repellent. - Take a poncho if you are going during the rainy season. CHOOSE THIS TOUR COMPANY AND THIS TREK!!! YOU WILL LOVE IT!

Did the 5 day Salkantay Trek with Alvaro as a guide. He did everything he could to keep everyone happy and safe. He encouraged and help people struggling with altitude sickness. He was funny, entertaining and really knowledgeable about nature, peruvian history and eco adventures. On the last day of the Trek, he took his time to thoroughly explain all of Machu Picchu.

We LOVED this spot...it was the highlight of our trip and we are so glad that we did it! Highly recommend the experience! Our family did not do a guided tour so I can't speak to that. We were in our personal vehicle and drove from Huanuco to Huallay. The drive took about 3 hours and most of it was the Carretera Central, the heavily-trafficked 2-lane highway that links Lima to the jungle side of Peru. We went up to 14366 feet but dropped back down to about 13500ish when we got to Huallay. Huallay is a national park with an exorbitant s/2 (about 75 cents) entrance fee,. There is parking next to the entrance. You can also request a guide for the hikes that they offer...one is a 3-hour route and the other is 5 hours. Our group preferred to just take off on our own...the route is marked fairly clearly and honestly there is a lot of just open plain so it's not hard to get your bearings and head back to the entrance. It was about 40 degrees, I think...our jungle crew was not well equipped--we were in layers with a fleece, tennis shoes, and wool hats and gloves purchased in Huanuco--but we were not too cold. The ground is marshy, so be prepared for damp feet. We also took in thermoses with hot water for mate de coca, as well as snacks. The park itself is amazing! Our kids had a fantastic time climbing and exploring and hiking. Thankfully no one got altitude sickness although we were all developing headaches by the time we left about 4 hours later. We are so very glad that we went!
