Having driven down via Lerma and Ciudad Rodrigo, and been a tad underwhelmed by the Plaza Mayors in those nice towns, the one in Trujillo came as a fabulous and welcome surprise. This is everything you could expect of a Plaza Mayor: it is a large and wide-open area with shops and cafes in the surrounding canopied perimeter; there is a huge church at one end as well as several impressive historic houses and palaces; and as centrepieces there is a fountain and an outrageously splendid statue of the conquistador Pizarro. All in all, this is a magnificent Plaza Mayor and one of the finest I have seen.

Trujillo is a fabulous city, albeit it is the size of a small town. It is famous as the home of the conquistadors Francisco Pizarro and his brother, and the huge wealth that they brought back from South America is evident in the grandeur of the huge houses and palaces situated round the Plaza Mayor, which is a fabulous square, and one of the finest I’ve seen. With a magnificent castle standing sentinel above the town; the vibrant Plaza Mayor; and lots of narrow streets to explore, this really is a splendid town to visit. Currently it isn’t on the mainstream tourist map - but it is certainly becoming better known, so I would advise you to get your visit in before the inevitable coach parties arrive! We stayed at the Parador, which I would certainly recommend.

located on the top of the hill, the castle (or rather fortress) looks impressive from outside, but even more so when going in and walking the walls. the center part is only an empty field with about nothing to see and the only inside visit is a small chappel, but the walls themselves are worth the visit for the great view they offer.
