Kathakali has been an all-male art form, with even women characters being portrayed by men. On this tour we meet members of India's first All Womens Kathakali group who broke through the male bastion, excelled in the art and made a mark for themselves. From being dismissed as a fad that would not last long they went on to win the President of India's medal of honour in the year 2017. On this tour the women artistes share with us their inspiring journey of starting the group while alongside explaining the different elements of this fascinating art form- its stories, language, costumes, music, training, mythology, et al. The interaction ends with a brief lecture-demonstration without make-up or costume. The tour is designed to be an informal one, it flows along naturally as a conversation between visitor and artiste, and last for about 2 hrs. The interaction is arranged at the private residence of the women artiste(s) which is located in Kochi, Kerala.

Inclusions: Light refreshments, Beverages, Snacks, Coffee and/or Tea

A common feedback from all our visitors has been that getting to meet a local family, in this case members of the Royal Family, is the most memorable part of their trip. While some conversations are about how the family reacts to their non-royal status today, most conversations are around day to day happenings in Kochi/Kerala and also about the country of the visitor. It is like meeting with friends whom you have not been in touch with for a long time, and this a happy reunion. The host family is well travelled and well educated which makes the conversation so much more enriching. The local history of the family and that of the city of Kochi/Kerala sets the tone for the meet with the family. Visitors also get to spend good time in a part of Kochi that is hardly visited by tourists, both foreign as well as domestic.

Inclusions: Local guide, Tea/Coffee/Refreshing Drink, Light refreshments

Exclusions: Hotel pickup and drop-off, Gratuities

Time spent with Geetha is much more than about interacting with a Kathakali artist. Anecdotes from her childhood, understanding the matrilineal Kochi royal family which she is a part of, and her deep love for Kathakali will keep you captivated . When she stands up and begins her Kathakali demonstrations , she transforms and takes you with her in the world of Kathakali , into the nuances of this performing art and understanding the story behind the women from the Kochi royal family taking up this male dominated performing art.
