Famous for its native son, the astronomer Copernicus, Torun was founded by the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century. You can still see the ruins of their castle, left pretty much unchanged from when it was destroyed by disgruntled medieval townsfolk. Torun was one of the few Polish cities to escape major damage in World War II. Its beautifully preserved Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don’t miss the striking Old Town Hall. Torun is also famed for its gingerbread.

This place has 6 floors that cover most areas of knowledge and because it's brand new the exhibits are all wonderful. There is something for every age here, from 2-13 years of age. We went with our 2-year old and she obviously couldn't gain knowledge but she had a blast. Personally, there is so much it's better to go multiple times but you can spend the whole day there easily. Family place with tons for kids to do. great educational experience especially if you have some background knowledge before going. Highly recommend.

Museum of Toruń Gingerbread The Museum of Toruń Gingerbread, a branch of the District Museum in Toruń, in the 19th c. gingerbread factory formerly owned by the Weese family, can be found at 4 Strumykowa St. It has taken three years to convert the building into a museum and prepare an exhibition space of some 1200 m2. The Museum of Toruń Gingerbread is likely to become a unique tourist attraction. Not only is it Poland's largest museum dedicated to the history of gingerbread but it is designed to be modern and interactive and solely dedicated to the long-standing European tradition of gingerbread making. Things to see and do in the museum Once you enter the former Gustav Weese gingerbread factory you are offered a tour during which you can learn many secrets about Toruń gingerbread: the ingredients necessary to prepare the dough, the baking techniques used as well as the gingerbread trade across the centuries. The Museum of Toruń Gingerbread features three exhibition floors. There are many surprises to be found here and attractions to enjoy, including a film about katarzynka (Little Kate), the most famous Toruń gingerbread biscuit, and an exhibition of early gingerbread moulds and ovens. In addition you will find an interactive recipe book, a multi-media show on the modern techniques used in Toruń-based Fabryka Cukiernicza 'Kopernik' S.A., and a 'meeting' with our own 'Gustav Weese', the former factory owner. You will also be invited to participate in a workshop giving you the hands-on experience of making your own gingerbread souvenir from dough prepared according to the original recipe, and then given a chance to taste this delicacy. The exhibition tour allows you to become familiar with a wide variety of gingerbread biscuits, a unique collection of former packagings, as well as gingerbread production techniques both past and present. On your own you can visit a café-club arranged in the style of the 1970s. Why is the Museum of Toruń Gingerbread worth a visit? Because Toruń is beautiful and the Museum of Toruń Gingerbread adds a taste and scent to its history. Welcome to the Museum of Toruń Gingerbread!!
On a wet and rainy October day we booked the 1 pm tour of the museum. We entered a charming old building and were suddenly thrown into an old bakery with giant wooden tables, rolling pins, wooden containers full of spices and several young actors who taught us how to make the original Pierniki!! In Polish and in English! It was great fun and very interactive. We mixed, rolled, shaped, cut and baked our gingerbread! It tasted very peppery!! Delicious. The cost for the whole family was just over 10 GBP! My only recommendation is that the actors should speak English more slowly..I know that they speak their mother tongue quickly, but when English is spoken as a second language too quickly, it becomes very difficult to understand! ..and their property of language was amazing, so it is such a shame that they literally ate some of their words in the process of speaking so quickly. But they were incredibly vibrant, entertaining and great fun! ????
