Mild ocean breezes, sandy beaches and swaying Torbay Palms give the small English town of Torquay a distinctively Mediterranean feel. More than just a beach spot, Torquay boasts an enormous coastal aviary and the famous Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves. Agatha Christie spent most of her life here, and the city is now home to multiple film companies. With such a rich literary history, Torquay may be the perfect place to finish writing that novel or screenplay, or just to relax with a good mystery.

Bygones is three floors of pure nostalgia for ALL AGES! Whether it be History, Railwayana or Militaria, you will reminisce! Wander back in time, visit our authentic life-size Victorian Street, see the Blacksmith hard at work, smell the treats of the Sweetshop, listen to the hustle and bustle of Victorian life. Imagine yourself in the nursery, kitchen, parlour or even the dentist! As you meander up to the top floor, hop on the 27-ton steam engine en route! Arrive in the 20th Century, take a break in our Station Café for a range of cakes and refreshments. Marvel over our completely refurbished model railway themed around English villages in WWI and WWII. Consider your ancestors in a WWI trench or taking cover in a WWII Anderson Shelter. Don’t miss the 1950’s and 60’s shopping arcade filled with post-war packaging and household items.
I loved it, it has the most amazing collection of almost anything that you could think of and there is something for everyone here. The recreation of a Victorian street is superbly done with so much attention to detail, there is an outstanding collection of military memorabilia, I was amazed by the railway artefacts including an ex Falmouth Docks steam locomotive. It is hard to do Bygones justice without an extremely long explanation of what is there. Fascinating to see old packaging, toys, kitchen equipment, the recreation of a dentists, a door from Dartmoor Prison, the list is endless. The welcome was friendly and I had an interesting conversation with the owner. It is said of many places that they are not to be missed but Bygones really is a place not to be missed. I think that to do it justice you would need to pay many visits as there is so much to see and take in.

We usually are in Torquay for the Agatha Christie festival and attend events at the Museum. It has an interesting display of various exhibits, a lovely shop with loads of books and gifts and a very nice cafe. It is within walking distance of Torquay and well-worth a visit.
