Things to do in Toronto, Canada: The Best Breweries

November 13, 2021 Brandee Mangan

We've heard Toronto described as "New York City run by the Swiss," and it's true—you can find world-class theater, shopping and restaurants here, but the sidewalks are clean and the people are friendly. The best place to start is literally at the top—the CN Tower, the tallest freestanding structure in the Western Hemisphere.

Steam Whistle Brewery

Located within walking distance of the CN Tower and Rogers Center, Steam Whistle Brewing occupies Bays 1-14 within the old John Street Roundhouse building, a designated National Historic Site that was previously home to the Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive repair facility. Thousands of visitors visit this brewery every year to attend one of the on-site events or take a tour of how the company brews its own Pilsner.

Stop. Don’t even try another craft beer while in Toronto. This is the one for you. Steam Whistle only brews one beer but it’s a hell of a beer. Crisp, flavourful and refreshing. If you’re stopping in for a cold one the incredibly pleasant and down to Earth staff will happily greet you and offer you a free sample of their beer — which was likely freshly brewed that day! The brewery itself though has evolved into something more — an experience. It’s always been a treat to visit the brewery but over the years it’s improved dramatically. The staff as so young and friendly. The beer is cheap. The brewery is usually home to art exhibits to browse during your visit, it offers informative tours (that’s usually $12 and includes a free beer or two during the tour), has a small snack bar with delicious options and has become the official pre drinking spot for Blue Jay fans and Maple Leafs fans before a game. Do yourself a favour and check out Steam Whistle Brewery. You don’t be disappointed.

Muddy York Brewing Co.

Muddy York Brewing Co. gets its name from a disparaging term used to describe the early settlement then known as York, which became the thriving metropolis of Toronto. Rainy days wreaked havoc on the city, turning its unpaved streets into impassable muddy roadways. It was a time of hard work and new beginnings, where folks took pride in their craft and built things to last. We here at Muddy York Brewing Co. feel much the same way about our beer. We take a ‘less is more’ approach to brewing. All of our beers are handcrafted, remarkably drinkable and well balanced. We take pride in the details because it’s the details that make good beers great. We look forward to seeing you here at our brewery. We’ll save you a seat at the bar.

Kensington Brewing Company

Our story starts in 2011 when we set out with a simple goal: brew a hoppy pale ale that would compliment our house-ground burgers. When our beer was a bigger hit than our burgers, we knew it was time to pursue an adventure in craft beer. Join us at our brewery, tap room and bottle shop and dive into a wide selection of amazing beer made right in the Market, inspired our friends and neighbours.
