My daughter and I wanted to try cooking Japanese cuisine while in Tokyo and were told about Buddha Bellies. Unfortunately, we visited Japan during the recent typhoon which caused us to miss our scheduled date. Our gracious hosts allowed us to join another class and they honored our dish choice. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. Our Sukiyaki was amazing and we also got to make Udon noodles. It was fun meeting the other guests and hearing of their travels. We even received a great recommendation for buying Waygu beef in the San Francisco area. Great outing. Highly recommend.

We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon with the delightful Yurico, who taught us to make delicious okonomiyaki from scratch. Her class is suitable for both beginners and also those with experience cooking. She explained each step very clearly and made the whole experience very worthwhile, and with her guidance our finished products came out perfectly. It was also nice to see the more residential area of Tokyo where she lives, after having already explored the city's main sites. We would definitely recommend this cooking class to anyone.

We spent a delightful morning with Mayuko learning to make bento boxes with panda rice balls. Mayuko is extremely friendly and positive, and a great teacher - we learned some cool techniques which we've since incorporated into our own cooking since returning to our home country, and my wife went out shopping straight after the class to get equipment to make bento boxes of our own. We did a few different activities and classes while we were in Japan for a month and this was easily the most fun we had. I heartily recommend this class to anyone who wants to have a fun morning with a great host and learn some cool things about Japanese cuisine.

My 2 teenage daughters and I thoroughly enjoyed our time with Tomoko on a rainy Tokyo day. From the time Tomoko met us at our hotel lobby to when she bade us farewell with a surprise little gift, we are grateful to her for opening up her lovely home and sharing her cooking knowledge and insights into Japanese culture. There are many menus to choose from on the website. We chose the gyoza and ramen menu. We ended up to be the only students on the day - what a treat! My 2 teenage girls loved learning how to wrap the gyoza. Tomoko is so warm and friendly. We felt like we were a guest in her house rather than at a commercial cooking school. I have been to many cooking classes around the world and this would rank very highly as a personal intimate experience to learn about Japanese home style cooking. Thank you Tomoko and I hope our paths cross again!

Cooking classes are the bread and butter (or rice and seaweed) of Shitamachi Yoitoko and visitors can choose from among four menus. The tempura and soba menu and okonomiyaki options are crowd pleasers, while the handmade udon – served in combination with steamed egg custard and easy-to-make traditional sweets – is one of the more unique dishes on offer. The noodles themselves may be unremarkable, but the traditional method of preparation involves stomping on the dough multiple times (in a sanitary manner, of course) and carefully slicing it into strips. Uchiyama also offers a sweets-only menu, where participants whip up various rice-flour treats such as shiratama dango (white rice flour dumplings) or sweet mochi. Most classes end with a tasting hour, where participants get to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Those who participant in the udon class even get to take home the extra dough or noodles, as well as a pair of chopsticks.
