Tradition collides with pop culture in Tokyo, where you can reverently wander ancient temples before rocking out at a karaoke bar. Wake up before the sun to catch the lively fish auction at the Tsukiji Market, then refresh with a walk beneath the cherry blossom trees that line the Sumida River. Spend some time in the beautiful East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, then brush up on your Japanese history at the Edo-Tokyo Museum. Don’t forget to eat as much sushi, udon noodles, and wagashi (Japanese sweets) as your belly can handle.

I didn't know what to expect when I booked a couples kimono shoot online last November. What a surprise we got; the two female staff were just so very nice and super friendly that the shoot turned into one of the best experiences we had during our two week holiday in Japan! One of the things I really liked about this company was how they gave us very clear directions to their studio from the subway station; they even sent us a map with clear photographs, so we couldn't get lost. The Japanese ladies at the studio spoke excellent English and were very chatty. And from the moment we walked in the door we were made to feel so very welcome. The two-hour shoot was just so much fun as well as being very relaxing. We both loved the amazing selection of colourful kimonos and the matcha tea and Japanese sweets we were offered at the end of our shoot. We also got to take some selfies before we changed back into our normal clothes! Thank you, ladies, for a wonderful experience and a perfect day. We hope to visit your lovely studio again on our next trip to Japan!

Mokuhankan is a traditional woodblock print shop located in the famous district of Asakusa in Tokyo. You can find newly published prints as well as a wide selection of antique offerings. (We are currently closed due to the pandemic, and will reopen when general tourism returns to Japan.)
Last year, my wife and I stumbled on this shop. Loved it. Purchased a few prints, and enjoyed talking prints with Dave. So we came back a year later, and had an even more amazing visit. Dave even gave us a tour and took us upstairs where the magic happens, and it was so cool to watch his printers making wonderful works of art. Even had the please of meeting Ayumi San (I love her ghost prints). And between visits, I browse the website and add even more prints to my collection. My wife and I spend a month or so in Japan each year, and making my pilgrimage to Mokuhankan will definitely be a mandatory trip.

I travelled to Japan with my father to watch rwc 2019 and decided to book a photo shoot with SAMURAI Sengoku Photo Studio as a memory of our trip together. Taro san was a great host and photographer with wonderful staff and shared some amazing Japanese history about the armour and samurai practises. Truely an unforgettable experience! I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to dive into Japanese history and culture and have fun while doing it! Thank you again!

Three years as a crew on the Peace Boat around the world. Two years as a tour attendant travelling all across Japan. I met people of different culture and tongue all across the globe. Trying on the ethnic garb of the land I was exhilerated by the experience. I thought maybe I could return the same experience to travellers coming to Japan. That's when I opened shop here in Asakusa.

Ginza Itoya has been a Tokyo favorite for more than 100 years. Recently renovated, the store still stocks a beautiful range of stationery, including greeting cards, letter paper, and wrapping paper.
Not for the usual tourist, this place is going to intrigue you and worse, if you are a stationery geek, empty your pockets in no time. We picked out so many unique items which are made in Japan and would make such perfect gifts rather than the run-of-the-mill souvenirs at airports and tourist traps. floor after floor of unique stationery.

This Tokyo landmark sells animated character goods. It has different corners dedicated to different characters including Snoopy and Hello Kitty, and its flagship location carries some exclusive items.
You need time to work through all the levels of this fabulous toy store, my kids were in toy heaven. There is everything from Lego to Snoopy, Hello Kitty and Miffy toys and merchandise as well as other toys. We spent around an hour working through the floors. There is an elevator for prams or if you can’t do the stairs. Really is a must if you are in Harajuku with kids.
