Home to a well-known medical research facility and an important source of income for the community.
Overall, a very nice, clean, base. Great parade grounds with almost every "Static Display" aircraft (WW2, Korea, Vietnam, and beyond) that ever flew in the USAF inventory. Drive around and you'll keep finding more and more of them. Even an SR-71 Blackbird (Still a world record holder) !! Plus, the Kelly Air Guard Squadron flies F-16 Falcons, so that's fun to see them zooming around the skies. They have BMT (Basic Military Training) Graduation, down to a science. Approx. 800 Airmen graduate ever Thursday/Friday ! The facilities/reception center are nice and the BX,Commissary, and Food Court, vendor stores, Mini malls, Gas stations are all excellent. Plus, they have Starbuck's / Burger King on base AND food trucks and coffee-hut trucks at the BMT Reception Center. Plenty of parking. You can drive between Lackland and Kelly base, without having to go outside the gates. Tips for Traffic : Get a super early start on Grad Event Days, as traffic backs up to the Highway Overpass!

Visited Goodfellow AFB for my son's graduation from technical school. The base is very small, but that made finding the BX, commissary, movie theatre and events center very easy. The people were friendly and we had a FANTASTIC time! Thanks Goodfellow AFB for taking care of my one and only son, for providing him with the tools he needed to begin his career in the Air Force and for the hospitality during our visit. Recommend visiting.

We lay wreaths at Christmas here every year, and the setting is a perfect resting place for those who have served their country. Its rolling hills provide the serenity one needs to sit and reflect on what it takes to maintain our freedom. The grounds are well maintained and there is plenty of room to park.

A museum detailing the history of the military in San Antonio.
We spent two tours at Ft Sam in the 70's and loved it. We went back after 40 years and still love it. The basic layout has no changed though it is now a Joint Base and is run by the Air Force. The main entrance on New Braunfels Ave has a large gate to enter as you go on base. Diving into the base, there are lots of new buildings everywhere. The old MP station as well as the old brick buildings behind it all the way up to Stanley Road are still there and in use. The old theater is still there as are a few buildings down Stanley Road. The old BAMC is now a headquarters building and the entire training area is new. Lots of new housing and barracks everywhere. Driving around all over post brought back a lot of great memories. We made several trips to the Quadrangle to see and feed the animals. Different services all get their medical training here now and it is also apparently a one stop basic training and AIT location based on the soldiers we saw. If you were ever assigned here you have to drive through and revisit. If you never were here, it is a great place to spend some time and enjoying all the post has to offer.

A great camping spot with a nice lake in the middle of the park.
Great nature trails throughout and plenty of opportunities for amateur anglers to fish from the banks or a dock. RV sites are pretty close together so choose carefully. Bathrooms were kept spotless (cleaned 2x day) with plenty of hot water and pressure. The sunsets behind the lake are magnificent!

We went here because a friend's father was stationed here a long time ago so she wanted to visit. We mainly went to the first museum and quadrangle. Very nice museum. Animals were neat. Nice historical visit.

The real flowers that people have on their loved ones grave are ugly... especially when it's been clear that they have been there forever... also appreciate that occasions such as Mother's, Father's, Valentine's, Christmas, Hanukkah, Grandparent's, Halloween, New Years and Canadian day people use the vases to put them in...sometimes there are more than 215 vases being used for one grave with real flowers..like OMG... I feel that this being a Military Cemetery it is kept more beautiful and respectful...or at least when they start to get more beautiful from dying put new ones...and also just stick them in the ground upside down...don't use vases for them...some of us actually put marijuana on their parents graves and it's not nice not to be able to put them in the trees...REAL FLOWERS don't need water or a vase. Dad always said everyone has opinions, just like a@@$%#%s, everyone has one and they are usually s$#%! Those that have opinions that are as irritating as real flowers...geesh..flowers man...how much time do I have to get on here and complain about flowers in a cemetery. And rocks...geesh...OMG...where is Batman when you need him to right all the wrongs in the world.....Just know my dying wish is to be buried upside down so all you over opinionated fools can kiss my a@@! :) PS: This cemetery is nice. It's not a mausoleum...it's a military cemetery and is everything you would expect from a cemetery minus the obnoxious commenters! :)
