Things to do in Tenerife, Canary Islands: The Best Walking Tours

September 17, 2021 Osvaldo Hartline

Tribal Terenife still shows influence from the aboriginal Gaunches people. Visitors clamber to conquer Mount Teide (Spain’s tallest peak) and to stretch out on the sands of Los Gigantes. Squawk hello to the playful parrots of Loro Park, or brave the petrifying drive to beautiful Masca Valley. For a true taste of Terenife, sample fresh farmhouse cheese and local bananas. A piece of delicate calado canario lace makes a special souvenir.

We give the option to customize the tour, valuing this request apart from the price initially established. Inclusions: Private transportation, Air-conditioned vehicle

Exclusions: You can arrange to stop to eat in a typical place, not for tourists, to enjoy the local food. Highly recommended by our customers., Cable car: it can be done, prior to the day of the excursion, it will depend on availability of tickets.

If occurs to you to travel to Tenerife island and you want to profit your time there and get the most of it traveling as a local, Oditen is absolutely a must. Felix was a perfect host and travel guide who cares a lot about his island. He was cheerful, kind and patient, showing us around in his confortable van, and sharing lots of information about Tenerife and about every single question we made. We visited hidden gems as a natural pond, which I personally really enjoyed, and also a killer place to observe the sunset over the clouds close to Teide's pick! We also had the opportunity to try delicious local food. What I appreciated the most is his dedication and commitment on trying a more sustainable tourism in the island. Definitely an experience I would recommend! PS. 24h can be too short! In this case, you can always extend ????

Anaga is a highland of mountains with sharp peaks and deep ravines covered with carpets of laurel trees (also called laurisilva) and dotted with charming hamlets. Exploring Anaga is a journey to a place that has an authentic rural flavour, a journey back in time to when the relationship between humans and their natural surroundings was much stronger. Discover this little paradise with your knowledgeable local guide in a small group.

We got up at 1h30 at night (sea level) and left with the car at 2 o'clock to drive to the TF21 parking lot at the start of the Sendero de Montaña Blanca (+/-2.200hm) from where our climb would start. At 3h30 there was no more parking available here and our driver took the car to the next parking (+/- 800m walk) and walked back up to the starting point. We started our climb a 3h45 under a black night sky filled with starts and an almost full moon, 10km/h wind and about 15° C. Sergio guided us through the walking trail up the Volcano. He stopped regularly to explain the various specificities of the Volcanic landscape, fauna and flora. He occasionally made a joke and was always concerned for our wellbeing. He frequently asked how we were doing and reminded us to slow down our paces as we would gain a lot of height fast (first we increased from 0 to 2.200hm with the car and then from 2.200hm to 3.700hm on foot to the top). He also made sure there was enough freedom for the more trained people in our little team so they could go at faster pace while he stayed with the rest. He stopped often to have a drink and eat so we kept our energy levels up and made sure the group stayed together. The Teide has a vast landscape with a beautiful horizon and huge crater. You come across big chunks/rocks of lava/magma which are called Huevos del Teide, some beautiful flowers (blue and white in August) and animal life (spiders and others). It is a really lovely climb in a different environment as compared to the Alps. Definitely to put on your list when you love mountain climbs! Sergio is a very good guide. He takes into account everyone’s condition and interests. We really enjoyed our climb up to the top of Volcano El Teide! Thank you Sergio! Greetings Babs and Koen

Teide National Park was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2007. During one day, we hiked in this beautiful national park, allowing us to greatly enjoy the strato-volcano of Teide-Pico Viejo which is the highest point in Spain (3,718 m). We were also impressed by the surroundings composed of lunar landscape of volcanic rocks, whose colors were in perpetual change; it was amazing to see the bright colours of volcanic rocks, contrasting sharply with the blue sky. Interestingly, we also observed the endemic flora of the Canary Islands. Altogether, I highly recommend to visit Teide National Park!!!

Our guide was enthusiastic (thank you Raquel!) and told us many things about the island and also patiently answered all our questions. Very flexible to our needs! Basso is easy to work with and responded quickly. I recommend Basso to anyone who wants a reliable organizer.

Excellent! My two children, ages 9 and 11, and I thoroughly enjoyed this! I was at first disappointed the moon was nearly full, but we still got in plenty of star and planet gazing AND got to see the moon and its rough surface up close! Our guide was passionate about his profession and deeply knowledgeable. I highly recommend it. Be sure to pack warmer clothes for this, it is worth it!

Don't expect much from their wines, but the service was really negligent for us, too. We had dinner at the restaurant and then took the tasting of 8 wines. Dinner was fine, but the tasting was extremely appalling and amateur. The lady at the reception was really insistant that we additionally take the cellar tour for a few euros extra, which we didn't want to do after our dinner. Then we were simply left at the table with 2 wines in the glasses. The waitresses would occassionally come to fill them up with another wine, only reading out the labels for us (grape, vintage). They didn't even bother to clean up the table after spilling one glass. We left after 6 or 7 wines after waiting for ~20 minutes, because our table was simply forgotten. I'd recommend to avoid this tourist trap. Wines are far from great and their focus is definitely not winemaking.

I did several hikes with Andy, e.g. Anaga (two different beautiful hikes), Masca from above and a few others. They were all absolutely amazing. The views I enjoyed, the nature I experienced and all the knowledge Andy has about Tenerife and especially the plants and birds typical for the region made my experience perfect. He knows the most beautiful paths that I would have never found or hiked without him and I would have missed the most beautiful spots on Tenerife.

The conservation of nature and traditions of this area of the island, are the result of the care and care of those who inhabit it: Salto del pastor, the so-called heroic viticulture, grazing goats, terraces grown potatoes and sweet potatoes, legends of Menceyato Guanche, houses-caves still inhabited, traditional Canarian architecture XVI and XVIII centuries, etc. In this unique place, life still passes in slow motion and its extreme conditions make its inhabitants true heroes. We will find uses, traditions and customs of the past. Its subsistence agriculture, potatoes, sweet potatoes, fruits ... and its basically goat farming that provides good cheeses and excellent dishes of goat meat, make the visit to a guachinche an authentic and obligatory experience.
