Tribal Terenife still shows influence from the aboriginal Gaunches people. Visitors clamber to conquer Mount Teide (Spain’s tallest peak) and to stretch out on the sands of Los Gigantes. Squawk hello to the playful parrots of Loro Park, or brave the petrifying drive to beautiful Masca Valley. For a true taste of Terenife, sample fresh farmhouse cheese and local bananas. A piece of delicate calado canario lace makes a special souvenir.

Flea market, better known as "el Rastro", the Municipal market of the Puerto de la Cruz open Wednesdays and Saturdays from early in the morning until 14:00.
OK ... let's begin by saying that this will definitely not be to everyone's taste. On Wednesday and Saturday it hosts the local flea market (or Trödelmarkt as my German friends would say). This is largely at the entrance to the main building with some stalls also on the roof. The main building is a more conventional open core structure with fruit, veg and fish stalls and lots of local snack bars. However the place really comes alive on Saturday when it is clearly a major focus for the ex pat German community and spanish cuisine is hard pressed to compete with typical German food and beer. If you speak a little german or are here with german friends, this is really great fun but it is noisy, frenetic and at times reminiscent of a slightly more mature Oktoberfest .... but with more sunshine. As I said, not to everyone's taste but, if you are in Puerto on a Saturday, it's worth trying for the experience. By the way, walk or take bus to get here .... parking is impossible here on saturday and wednesday.
