It is 28 kilometres (17 miles) east of Faro and 75 kilometres (47 miles) west of Huelva across the Río Grande (Rio Guadiana) into Spain. The Gilão River meets the Atlantic Ocean in Tavira. The population in 2011 was 26,167, in an area of 606.97 km².

As a group of 4 adults, we booked a transfer from Faro airport to Tavira, I did this by text from the UK in English and received a quick response to confirm. The cost was €40, the taxi was waiting for us and a very pleasant driver in a well kept modern taxi. We used them again for our return and for several local journeys. Excellent service every time.
