The Agrarian Kitchen

The Agrarian Kitchen Cooking School is set on a 5-acre farm offering paddock-to-plate experiences in a 19th century schoolhouse at Lachlan, 45 minutes from Hobart in Tasmania’s Derwent Valley, Australia. The Agrarian Kitchen was established by Rodney Dunn and his wife, Séverine Demanet who moved from Sydney to Tasmania in July 2007 to transform the schoolhouse into Tasmania’s first hands-on, farm-based cooking school. Cooking classes commenced in November 2008. Set on five acres, The Agrarian Kitchen Cooking School includes a working farm and incorporates an extensive vegetable garden, orchard, berry patch and herb garden, all grown using organic principles. Also in residence are Berkshire pigs, Barnevelder chickens, milking goats, a flock of geese and honeybees. The Agrarian Kitchen Cooking School grows and uses heirloom varieties of fruit, vegetables and rare breed animals in its cooking experiences and also sources ingredients from local farmers, fishermen, gardeners and artisan producers. Cooking experiences are led by Rodney Dunn, former Food Editor of Australian Gourmet Traveller magazine and one-time apprentice to Australian chef, Tetsuya Wakuda, as well as a supporting cast of Tasmanian cooks and producers.

Visited for a large group birthday lunch & chose the set price menu. Wonderful tasty, fresh food with plates to share. Great wait staff who were very helpful, especially with several young children in our group. Really appreciated this! The burratta, tomatoes, zucchini, lamb shoulder & desserts were great as were the cocktail choices. Would have loved a few more Tassie wines on the menu. The setting is comfortable & relaxed, despite the previous history of the building. Not a zombie in sight. Thanks for a wonderful experience.

Paddock to Garment

Paddock to Garment takes alpaca and silk, produced predominantly from our own alpacas. Some special pieces include silk from my hand raised silk worms. I spin, dye and weave in the Studio in Cygnet, while our alpacas are happy in their paddocks two kilometres away. I work with colour & texture to create one-of-a-kind items to last a life time. Every piece is unique and handcrafted. Come and have a look. Be amazed by how stunning the combination of alpaca and silk is.
