The Agrarian Kitchen

The Agrarian Kitchen Cooking School is set on a 5-acre farm offering paddock-to-plate experiences in a 19th century schoolhouse at Lachlan, 45 minutes from Hobart in Tasmania’s Derwent Valley, Australia. The Agrarian Kitchen was established by Rodney Dunn and his wife, Séverine Demanet who moved from Sydney to Tasmania in July 2007 to transform the schoolhouse into Tasmania’s first hands-on, farm-based cooking school. Cooking classes commenced in November 2008. Set on five acres, The Agrarian Kitchen Cooking School includes a working farm and incorporates an extensive vegetable garden, orchard, berry patch and herb garden, all grown using organic principles. Also in residence are Berkshire pigs, Barnevelder chickens, milking goats, a flock of geese and honeybees. The Agrarian Kitchen Cooking School grows and uses heirloom varieties of fruit, vegetables and rare breed animals in its cooking experiences and also sources ingredients from local farmers, fishermen, gardeners and artisan producers. Cooking experiences are led by Rodney Dunn, former Food Editor of Australian Gourmet Traveller magazine and one-time apprentice to Australian chef, Tetsuya Wakuda, as well as a supporting cast of Tasmanian cooks and producers.

Visited for a large group birthday lunch & chose the set price menu. Wonderful tasty, fresh food with plates to share. Great wait staff who were very helpful, especially with several young children in our group. Really appreciated this! The burratta, tomatoes, zucchini, lamb shoulder & desserts were great as were the cocktail choices. Would have loved a few more Tassie wines on the menu. The setting is comfortable & relaxed, despite the previous history of the building. Not a zombie in sight. Thanks for a wonderful experience.

Our converted barn now operates as a cookery school, farm gate, function centre and a place to discover and taste all things truffle.

Not too far south of Devonport, en route to Cradle Mountain, this boutique truffle experience will delight foodies! A small range of all home grown quality products include an infused oil that reeks of truffle and a delicious hazelnut dukkah. The truffle themed lunch menu (bookings recommended ... it is popular with locals and only seats very limited numbers) included a mouth watering truffle brulee. The rustic cabin with its artfully chosen scattering of antiques and its open plan kitchen dining areas is warm and inviting, as are the delightful hosts; we look forward to returning to hunt for our own truffles in the hands on experience offered during harvest season!

Farm hospitality was welcoming and friendly, farm pod was great with so many thoughtful additions such as hot chocolate and toasting forks with marshmallows for the fire pit and wood fired hot tub which made for a memorable stay. Map of walks a little confusing but just follow the signs to explore the farm.

Highland Getaway

Go on a farm adventure tour area with Julie in her 6 seater ATV around the 127acre property for $140 per group (for up to 5 people) for two hours. Bring your camera and explore the beautiful landscape and be on the lookout for the small colourful wrens and the wedge tail eagles soring high in the sky. Get up close to feed the friendly alpacas and walk amongst the Highland Cattle. You’ll love it.

This is such an amazing place to stay. The accomodation is spectacular with views you can only dream of and the spa with views of the mountains was the perfect way to unwind. The kitchen area is small but has everything you could possibly need. I’d advise using the communal bbq or eating out for dinner. The host Julie is friendly and accommodating and goes out of her way to make sure you enjoy your stay. The included farm tour was fantastic Julie was very genuine and informative and being able to meet her gorgeous animals and brush her highlands was something truly special. I couldn’t recommend this place highly enough!!

What a lovely chance find this was. The cheese tasting was both informative and generous, as regards the spirits then again they were full of useful information behind the making of the vodka, gin etc. All very nice. Great opportunity to have a coffee in their resturant and to admire the views.
