The magnificent brick building with its amazing Gothic entrance is very hard to describe because it is so huge and apparently the largest brick Cathedral in that part of the world. But... when you enter inside that is when your breath is taken away...it is beautiful. Although it is a French Cathedral the Art is Italian and it is spectacular. I actually visited more than once because I could not absorb everything. The history, the color, the Art ,amazing and a definite "must see" in Albi.

In a lovely setting with excellent hospitality, we enjoyed a week of Recorder music making under the direction of Ian Wilson. There are lovely walks nearby to stretch the legs a little.

The Benedictine Abbey was founded in 754 at the foot of the Black Mountain. Throughout its history, the Abbey has undergone numerous changes : a seminary, a Royal Military School under the reign of Louis XVI, and then , under the director ship of Father Lacordaire, a famous and internationally well known school. Military, writers, philosophers and politicians were trained there, until its closure in 1991. Since 1993, the joint trade union has renovated this classified historic building and has been the subject of an ambitious project for the development of tourism and culture. The Sorèze Abbey-School is recognized as a pole of excellence and listed among the major attractions in Midi-Pyrénées.
The abbaye effectively contains two museums in one. Firstly the royal school covering centuries of education, gives a very good insight into the life of students yesteryear, but even better is the museum dedicated to the work of Frère Robert who brought a new sense to wall carpets and art. It is rare to find a museum so well laid out and enjoyable to spend time in. Well worth a visit.
