The only part remaining of the original medieval castle is the tower of Simon de Montfort to which the existing forecastle was added in the 14th century. The main body, which was built between 1530 and 1545 in the style of the Italian Renaissance, boasts façades decorated with sculptures which will undoubtedly be of special interest to the visitor. The various rooms are enriched by their antique furnishings. The Abbey of Beaulieu-en-Rouergue was founded in the 12th century and was extended in the 17th and 18th century. It was partly demolished after the Revolution but was fortunately saved and restored in the 1960s. The 13th century church, chapter house and cellar form an excellent example of Cistercian architecture. Since 1970, the Abbey of Beaulieu-en-Rouergue has housed the Contemporary Art Centre with a fine collection and temporary exhibitions.
