You can eat very well—and very cheaply—in Taipei. The restaurants may not look posh, but the quality of the food is superlative. And there’s a huge variety of restaurants—in addition to local Taiwanese specialties, you’ll find regional cuisines from all over China, as well as great Indian, Japanese and even Italian options. Just make sure to leave some room for snacks—street-vendor food here is addictive.

Really enjoying a walk through the National University of Taiwan during my visits, since 2009. Strongly recommended a walk from the main gate to the library.

Chinese Culture University is highly regarded academically, but it is located on top of Yang Ming Mountain. The view is marvellous, but it's hard to get to. Even though it is not far from downtown Taipei, as the crow flies, it takes at least 45 minutes by bus. I have visited the main campus in Shihlin several times; Chinese Culture University is a private institution, with a student body of over 30,000. It has high academic standards. The martial arts program is amongst the world's best The area is famous for its hiking trails.

The Taipei Story House is a favourite mansion for Taipei people. A wealthy tea merchant had it constructed in the early Japanese colonial period. Now it is a museum. The Story House is immediately adjacent to the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. You can take the bus down Chung Shan North Road or get the MRT.
