Things to do in Sydney, New South Wales: The Best Wine Tours & Tastings

June 7, 2021 Agatha Simes

Sydney offers plenty of historical and contemporary Australian flavor. The marvelous Sydney Opera House looks like a great origami sailboat, floating peacefully in a harbor. Wander the narrow cobblestone streets of The Rocks and then take in a street performance on the Circular Quay before heading into the Museum of Contemporary Art. The views from the Sydney Tower Eye observatory are epic – use this chance to get to know the layout of the city from high above.

We were looking to book a tour to the Blue Mountains at the last minute in probably the busiest week of the year. Although we called on New Years Eve and Country Trails was fully booked that week, Glen very kindly suggested other companies who might be worth trying. Luckily we did manage to find one available. His was the only tour company who took this extra time to help and we really appreciated this, thank you Glen. We will definitely look you up (in good time!) when we come back again.

Learn what goes into making the perfect glass of incredibly well-balanced red wine. Urban Winery Sydney’s blending sessions are one of the more entertaining and informative classes. Separated into groups, sit down with our head winemaker Alex Retief and be taken through six single variety red wines, exploring the aroma, structure and palate-feel of each. Each group is then given measuring cylinders and half an hour to come up with their favourite blend, for example, mixing 50% shiraz, 30% merlot, 10% petit verdot and 10% tempranillo. These ‘favourite blends’ are then collated and poured to the groups, so they can be blind-tasted and judged by everyone involved – with an ultimate winner appointed on the day. Our guests will sit amongst the wine barrels in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, however feel as though they have been transported to the vineyards of regional NSW. The experience will round out with a sample from a few select bottles paired with a cheese and charcuterie platter.

Inclusions: Two-hour blending session with winemaker, Tasting six wines from three different wine regions, exploring the aroma, structure and palate-feel of each, Each group is then given measuring cylinders and half an hour to come up with their favorite blend, Blind-tasted and judged by everyone involved, Enjoy a shared NSW charcuterie and cheese platter, Souvenir bottle of A. Retief wine to take home, Snacks, Alcoholic Beverages

Exclusions: Additional take away wines available to purchase and take home from the cellar door

Alex the winemaker proudly demonstrated the characteristics of 6 of his own wines. Brilliant for the amateur expert or beginner, arming one with the means to appreciate some of the subtler features of these European style whites, rose and reds. Accompanied by a delightful charcuterie plate, this is a novel way to have a late lunch. Recommended!

Two hours north of Sydney is the beautiful Hunter Valley wine region – experience personal tastings, foodie delights and more in this full-day tour. Explore the scenic countryside and expansive vineyards of the Hunter Valley wine region. If we're lucky, see kangaroos in the wild. Enjoy wine tasting at 3-4 cellar doors (both large and boutique) and indulge in local cheese and chocolate. Lunch is in the pretty surrounds of the Hunter Valley Gardens complex. Our philosophy on visiting The Hunter Valley is to take in 3-4 wineries and really enjoy the experience with your own small group. Trying to cram more than this in just leads to an exhausting day without appreciating how wonderful the region really is.

Inclusions: delicious complimentary snacks and bottled water, transportation and all car park fees, wine tasting, cheese tasting and chocolate sampling, your private guide, Bottled water, Snacks

Exclusions: Lunch is at your own expense, allowing you full choice from the menu., You may also wish to purchase wine, cheese and chocolate after the tastings.

I’d like to congratulate Darryl and the team for making our trip to Dangar Island such a memorable experience. The weather was perfect (ok that part is good luck) and the pace was leisurely and relaxing. A boat ride in a beautifully restored timber boat across the Hawkesbury river was a treat as we saw locals transporting their shopping from the mainland to their island home or returning home from other travels. Darryl had organised lunch on the waterfront at the quaint cafe but not before taking us on a walking tour of this car less paradise. Beautiful views all around and a strip of beach paradise was there to be discovered. I could go on but to sum up the day I would say if you want a relaxing day with a knowledgable and personable guide contact Darryl and the team. I’m so glad we did.

Had a nice evening with Maree as she took us around Surry Hills. A wonderful way to see another part of Sydney off the beaten tourist track. A nice variety of food. If you book through a travel agent / operator it’s best to connect with Maree directly before the tour to ensure dietary need and wants (e.g. what you don’t like or won’t eat) are considered.
