Arctic Moose Farm

Reviewed By E5060VAdavidb

We found the Arctic Moose Farm on Trip Advisor and decided we’d like to visit as we were staying on the boarder in Finland. We called speculative to arrange a visit and was welcomed by Ola, the owner, who arranged to meet us at the farm. We were really pleased with the experience and would recommend it for two reasons, you can get up so close to these huge and gentle creatures. Oscar was a particularly big Moose who we fed with some carrots. Secondly we met Ola the who was an equally big character, he explained to us about the husbandry of moose and their lifecycle, told us funny stories and gave excellent moose call demonstrations (If you go you’ll understand my Title). Ola also introduced us to the family herd of reindeer. We were able to walk amongst them, they weren’t penned in so no fences. He spoke to us about how his ancestors had been Reindeer farmers for 100s of years and answered our questions. He also told us about how in his lifetime he’d seen the environmental conditions change for the worse, nature wasn’t able to respond quickly enough to the climate. This year he was having to supplement the reindeer diet as unusually wet weather in December 2019 had entombed the natural reindeer food in ice throughout the winter. We are a family of 4, inc two children 10 & 13 and we all enjoy these types of experiences, there were only 2 other people with us so this was more of a private and exclusive tour and guide. Finally we experienced a very important piece of Swedish culture, Fika, which is a break for coffee and a slice of lovely cake made by Ola’s wife. Thank you to Ola and his wife.

Huge park on the outskirts of the city center. Parking (meter) available. Did not know what to expect. Absolutely huge, with large flat grass areas to relax, picnic or unwind, and forest areas. A free zoo in the middle allows you to see Gotland ponies, pingouins, sea lions, the famous moose and other Nordic animals. Very well done. There’s even a little petting zoo for children (closed at the moment due to corona). You can stop for an ice cream or waffle at a little cafe in the middle, or when you get to the end of the zoo there’s a much bigger restaurant that offers a lot more choices including savoury dishes. There’s also a great kids playground. Near the natural history museum.

Glasrikets Algpark

Reviewed By gabrielaolem - Kalmar, Sweden

The experience of seeing a moose so close, being able to feed them and even pet is not something you can have "in real life", so having this kind of park is absolutely fantastic! The park itself is not very big, but is just enough for its purpose! We get on a wagon and go through a fenced little forest, where the mooses and their calves are. We are given some branches of their favorite trees and then, luckily, some may get up and eat it from us. The tour takes 40-50 minutes, goes fast and does not gets boresome (at least not for us!). The guide is very pleasant and communicates well. Besides the mooses, there are also some alpacas in a different fenced area. And there is a pond where it's possible to fish rainbow trouts. The souvenir shop has really beautiful and high-quality products - I was positively surprised! And to finish, it's possible to eat there too! Moose hamburger, moose pizza (cheese pizza with moose sausage on top) among others like sausage and waffles (I do think they also have vegetarian choices). You can get your hamburger and grill it in the barbecue house that stays close to the pond (very pleasant). Our highlight was the chocolate fudge brownie that was the best we ever had! We left there very content and will most definitely take our visitors there if we have the chance!

Skanes Djurpark Resort. Sweden. Coping with a cashless society such as Sweden and their SWISH carding machines is not easy when you are fixed in your older generation system. It all started at the airport for the flight to Sweden via Copenhagen for a week’s holiday in the cold but clean air. I was one of the minority with a paper pass for the flight in my hand pretending it was a ticket. Yes, a ticket, remember them? The majority were checked in on their smart phones and the desk in departures accepted them. Then the train over the bridge to Malmo onwards to Almhult again a paper ticket not the phone like the others. Now in the supermarket, a self-check handset and no counter to buy the food just a Swish contactless. What is going on? This is now the state in virtually cashless Sweden, where even a play-centre like Leo’s Lapland do not accept cash transactions. All tickets are bought and paid for on phones, and the phones read digitally at the end of the transaction with direct in/out banking. I am not a technophobe. I use my computer daily, but I have serious doubts that such a society could be brought to its knees by internet rogues, and flat batteries. Being the only way to buy tickets on the last minute for my family to enjoy a day at Skanes Djurpark Resort some 80Km south of Almhult was by phone. I didn’t feel good about that. The drive there was easy as the roads are empty and straight. The resort is easy to find, easy to park at and large enough to provide a full day for a family of mixed ages. Cost is high, but then everything in Sweden is expensive, correction except hotdogs in the IKEA headquarter store. A family of four, two adults and two kids under 12 would cost 269 and 179 SEK respectively each, that’s 896 SEK or £72 at the present rate of 12.4/£1. Not that bad if you say it quick. Sound expensive but believe me you do get a lot, unless the kids see the gift shops, then you’re scuppered. Bears, Deer, Moose, Wolves, Wild Boar, Bison, Hawks, Goats, Sheep plus a Tractor ride, lots of climbing frames and picnic areas. The tree walk is the best way to see the animals and the kids love it. An interesting whole day is easy, take the smart phones off your kids as they are too much of a distraction. The return journey was however much more exciting and memorable as a wild Deer ran out from the forest and nearly crashed into our car, did I say nearly, I meant ‘My God that was close’. If you are in Sweden and in the vicinity then go and spend the day there, do not forget you smart phone and make sure it’s charged and your bank account can stand the sudden shock if the kids notice the gift shops.

Wow, such a great experience! We ended up here by accident, but it was a happy accident. They have designed the park really well, you walk along a wooden path through the animals natural habitat. All Nordic, local animals combining both their beauty and preserving an understanding of animals from and living in the region. They have small cottages along the way where you can start a fire (they leave wood for you) and you can bring food and / or grill hot dogs. Such a nice add! Loved it and would highly recommend it to couple and / or families visiting the area.

We caught the Christmas market and it was wonderful. So many choices and family fun. Good day out for anybody. Very popular with locals from near and far. Great bus service from town and only 10 minutes ride. If you enjoy walking it is easy to get there along the marina to Djuragarden. Price included the old village and the zoo.
