You view great wine as the essence of a good vacation. Your travel companion, however, is a beer aficionado. Will it be Paris or Munich? Stop arguing and go to Strasbourg, where you can have the best of French and German cuisine, including the booze. The entire central island is a World Heritage Site. Don’t miss the 12th-century cathedral or the storybook "la Petite France" neighborhood.

And it IS an interesting story. We knew nothing of the city's history other than it came French at some point. This nicely organized museum puts meat on that bone. Strasbourg's history as a free city, effectively a republic, until Louis XIV made it French, is a remarkable story. Definitely worth a visit.

Elegant 18th-century palace houses three museums: Musee des Beaux Arts, Musee Archeologique and Musee des Arts Decoratifs.
Rohan Palace is next to the Strasbourg Notre Dame Cathedral and houses the Museum of Fine Art (European paintings from the Middle Ages to 1870), the Archeological Museum (Alsatian history from 600,000 BC to 800 AD), and the Rohan Palace rooms (bishops, cardinals residence of the House of Rohan, an ancient French noble family). The first Sunday of every month is free, but the headsets are not free and everything is not available to see. We were happy with all that we viewed on the free Sunday we visited. The Art museum hours are 10 am to 6 pm Tuesday -Sunday, they are closed on Mondays. The Archaeology & Palace/Decorative Arts museums hours are Wed-Sat 2 pm-6 pm, closed on Tuesdays. The fee/admission is 6.5-7 Euros for each museum. There was an option for all three that was 12 or 13 Euros.

Tomi Ungerer was born in Strasbourg in 1931. He was a n internationally renowned artist who did political cartoons, illustrations for children’s books, advertisements, satirical drawings, etc. His political posters and drawings of social satire are considered to be iconic images around the world. The museum also includes interactive displays of interest to children. The building itself is interesting and the displays are easy to see. If you like graphic arts and illustrations, this is an intimate and interesting museum.
