With about 120,000 people, Stavanger is Norway’s fourth-largest city and a fascinating mix of old and new. Its history stretches back deep into the Middle Ages. Stavanger was once a tranquil coastal market town and then later an important fishing port. But it was the 1969 discovery of oil offshore that forever changed the now bustling city’s fortunes and landscape. Don’t miss the well-preserved old town (Gamle Stavanger), the unique Canning Museum or the 12th-century Stavanger Cathedral.

I booked the trip to Pulpit Rock through Lysefjorden Adventures on 17th March 2021, and my guide for the trip was Hege Wikbo. I was greeted at my hotel in Sola at 07:00am and transported by mini bus directly to Preikestolen, which took around 45 minutes. I was lucky enough to be the only person on the tour that day, so I had my tour guide to myself for the whole duration, and she was able to pass on her local knowledge in abundance. I couldn’t have chosen a better day for the tour as the weather was fantastic, with clear blue skies and the sun shining, plus, Hege and I were the only people to be seen for miles! Around half way up we encountered snow and ice, but thankfully Hege had brought some crampons for us both to use, and this made the hike so much easier without the worry of slipping over. After a steady hike of around an hour and a half, we made it to Pulpit Rock, and I was not disappointed. The views were amazing, and most importantly to me, I had the whole place to myself as nobody else was there. I added the photo package (200.00 NOK) to the tour, and Hege was able to take some amazing photos of me with Pulpit Rock to myself. I spent around 30 minutes at Pulpit Rock enjoying the views, then we make our way back down to the starting position, and made our way back to my hotel for lunch time. Overall, I had a fantastic morning with a fantastic guide, and this made my trip to Norway complete! Many thanks!

Last month I finally found a perfect weekend for attempting the Pulpit Rocket. As a total novice in hiking, I decided to book a hike with Outdoorlife Norway for the following day. After having received a confirmation from the organizer I booked a flight and hotel and went to the airport. I then received a mail from the organizer saying that due to a clerical error I should not have been able to book this tour. 30 minutes later another mail confirmed that the tour was booked, and they would pick me up at my hotel the following morning. Then yet another mail saying that no there was no trip, by now I have arrived in Stavanger. Outdoorlife Norway offered me the money back or a different tour that started at 3.15 am. I have never hiked or climbed anything, so my first time was not going to be in darkness, therefore I chose the money back. The following day I took the normal bus to The Pulpit Rocket and climbed on my own during the daytime. Don’t get me wrong the hike is fantastic, and I am sure that the people that work for Outdoorlife Norway are really good when they do their hikes. However, my advice is to save your money and do it on your own as it is a fairly easy hike as far as hikes go.

Sverd i fjell is a must-see. In 872, a great battle was fought all around this area that caused Norway to be birthed. A place of real historical significance. If you are in Stavanger then you have to go and see the swords and learn about the historical significance of the monument. Your guide will pick you up at your hotel, cruise ship or another place you are staying in Stavanger. On the way to Ullandhaug Tower, you’ll stop at Hafrsfjord, where a historical battle was fought in the age of Vikings between 872 and 900. From Ullandhaug Tower, you will get a bird’s eye view over the city and Ryfylke Fjords. After that, you will stop at the Swords in Rock monument, where you will have time to take photos. After returning back to the city you will have a sightseeing tour of the old city – Gamle Stavanger. You’ll be able to view the outside of Stavanger Cathedral, plus you will have free time to experience Stavanger and to shop for souvenirs before returning back to your hotel/cruise ship.

The trip should be able to cancel if heavy rain. It was so slippery on vet rocks - it was dangerous. After walking in 4 hours in heavy rain, I were wet and cold, and the café should have a fireplace to warm up beside, while waiting 1 hour for the bus to leave. The bus driver should put much heat on in the bus - after such a cold trip. We should also be able to put a bag with dry clothes in a locker in the mountain lodge, so that we could change to dry clothes after the trip.
