This fortification is one of the few built in between 15th and 18th century to protect the village of Tučepi. It makes part of the village center, and it makes a complex with the residential area.

I took the easier of the two routes because I would not consider myself super fit for this type of climb. The path starts next to the fire station. If you’re facing it, go left and follow the signs for the fortress. It’s a well marked path just keep your eye on the rocks for markers. I set out at 8 am knowing that it would be a scorcher later on in the day. I would not want to do this any later in the summer months. You must have proper footwear and closed shoes with some grip. You cannot do this in sandals or flip flops. The climb is treacherous but definitely doable. I stopped when I needed to and had 1.5 litres of water. It took me just over an hour each way and longer than expected but that’s ok. It was not a race. The way down was also challenging as it was a little slippery. The entrance to the fortress is 20 Kuna. Make sure you have cash. The views are beyond description and well worth the pain.

Rising on a small reef near the shore, this fort was built by the Benedictine nuns in 1545. It used to be known as “The nun’s fort” and it served as a nucleus of future settlement of Kastel Gomilica. Thee old wooden drawbridge was replaced by a stone bridge as the place expanded following the easing of Turkish raids.

This fortress is not advertised very much...came across review of this on TripAdvisor, thankfully. It is absolutely breathtaking view specially during sunset! Hiking up on mounting road path is fairly easy, it's a stone path but not steep hill, very comfortable gradually uphill and takes only 45-50. You can see the whole Hvar City and all the surrounding Islands. Highly recommend, it is worth the walk. It is not a fortress you can go inside, its used as Tele communication facility now days. Do not forget your camera!

The Latin inscription carved above the castle gate dates its construction to 1508. It was built on a small isle close to the shore by local noble Stjepan Staphileo whose name is derived from Latin word for grapes, that decorate his coat of arms. The castle’s interior courtyard opens up to a large covered terrace facing the sea.
